About This Pub

Ah, the Hare & Hounds – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in St Albans, you know? From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, the staff really go the extra mile to make everyone feel welcome, whether you're nipping in for a quick pint after a wander around the cathedral or settling in for a relaxed catch-up with mates. The atmosphere is spot on, with cosy inside vibes and that lovely garden and outside seating that's brilliant for soaking up the sun or enjoying a bit of fresh air. And let's not forget the food – that Sunday Roast sounds like a winner, with tender beef and those perfectly crispy roasties that leave you smiling. It's clean as a whistle too, which always makes a difference when you're out for a good time. On the flip side, it's an older building, so it does tend to get a bit chilly inside, especially if the heating isn't cranked up, and that might be something to keep in mind if you're heading there on a frosty evening. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back night out, with plenty of positives that outweigh the minor niggles, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area looking for a friendly pint and a chat.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It has a lovely atmosphere, both inside and out, with great outside seating that's perfect for a sunny afternoon or evening.
  • The food is spot on, like that tasty Sunday Roast with tender beef and perfect roasties – a real treat for a weekend meal.
  • The pub's clean and tidy throughout, including the toilets and garden area, which adds to the welcoming vibe.
  • It's a versatile spot, ideal for casual drinks, informal meetings, or group gatherings, with a mixed crowd that keeps things lively.
Cons
  • It can get quite cold inside, especially in an older building without double glazing, which might put a dampener on things during chillier weather.
  • As it's an old pub, there might not be much in the way of modern comforts, so it's worth wrapping up warm if you're visiting in winter.

Nice atmosphere inside, outside seating too which is a lovely option. Good for a stop after visiting the nearby cathedral and reflecting on our mortality while contemplating a pint.

A lovely pub in a beautiful location. Just had a work meeting here and really enjoyed the atmosphere and drinks. The staff took great care of us — friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend for both casual drinks and informal meetings!

Had a lovely Sunday Roast, beef was very tasty and tender. Perfect roasties and gravy. Only issue I had - it was very cold in the pub. It’s an old building, so can’t have double glazed windows - but could have done with the heating being on. But I’ll definitely be back for food again. Owners and staff are great too. Keep up the good work. Had to downgrade my review. As had food again & it really was awful. Not just for me but for 6 people - I hope the pub manage to pull it back again, as it would be a shame for it to be under new management yet again

Been here several times over the last few months and always a good atmosphere. Mixed age group . Nice garden seating area and under cover marquee . Thank you to the owners and staff.
