About This Pub

Ah, the Royal Oak – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a reliable old mate, you know? Tucked away in Burton upon Trent, it's all about nailing the classics with top-notch real ales that hit the spot every time, and the prices won't leave you feeling short-changed. I love how it keeps things simple and friendly, with a proper community vibe where you can chat away or dive into a game of pool without any fuss. On the flip side, it's not going to blow your socks off if you're chasing the glitzier spots in town – it's more your everyday gem rather than a standout star, and the hours can be a bit confusing, so it's worth double-checking before you head out. All in all, if you're after an honest, down-to-earth pint and a bit of good craic, it's well worth a visit, but temper your expectations if you're exploring Burton's brewing heritage.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The real ales are spot on, especially the Pedigree – it's a proper treat for anyone who loves a good pint from local brewers.
  • It's got a really friendly atmosphere, making you feel right at home, with kind staff and a welcoming vibe that's perfect for a casual catch-up.
  • They've got games like pool and darts in a separate room, so you can have a laugh without disturbing the rest of the crowd.
  • Prices are reasonable, keeping things affordable for a night out without breaking the bank.
  • It's family-friendly in spots, allowing you to pop in with the little ones if needed, which adds a nice community touch.
Cons
  • It doesn't quite stand out as the top pub in Burton, a town famous for its brews, so it might not wow you if you're expecting something extraordinary.
  • The operating hours seem a bit muddled from what I've seen, which could make planning a visit tricky at times.
  • It's more of a straightforward locals' spot, so if you're after fancy decor or a wide range of fancy cocktails, you might find it a tad basic.

Full marks for he ale at this pub. The Pedigree was spot on. A proper locals pub hanging on for dear life like many more across the UK. If you like real ale go in you won't be disappointed.

Burton is a town world renowned for fine ales, and being the Brewing Capital, you’d reckon just about every pub in the town would be A*, S-tier, 10/10, a standout pub. Well, out of all the pubs in the town, this is by no means an awful pub, for the pint was decent, price on it was ok, and the staff weren’t horrible like you’d expect from someone writing a one star review, but it’s just the vibe and appearance of the place. “Family beer garden”? That’s not really that well earned, for the beer garden in question to the rear of the pub looks like the last place you’d be comfortable in the evening having a pint. Holes in the fence, cigs everywhere, the noisy rumble of traffic on the A38 flyover so close nearby, it’s not exactly scenic, and more akin to bloody Detroit! All in all, again, not really a truly awful pub, but it’s not a picturesque place to enjoy a pint, decent enough if you just fancy a boozer’s pub and nothing much more, hence the 3 stars. I don’t mean for this review to be scathing or offend the pub owners or anything like that, I’m just keen as a lover of good ale, to point out things that could be remedied to make this a good pub if not a great pub! 😊
