About This Pub

Oh, The Beacon's a real gem in Whitley Bay, isn't it? From what I've gathered, it's that kind of place where you can pop in for a mid-week drink by the fire or gather the family for some solid pub grub – think delicious options on their fixed menus that cater to all tastes. The staff are just lovely, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, which really adds to the warm, friendly feel. It's brilliant for socialising, with quiz nights that get everyone involved and a beer garden that's spot on for sunnier days. On the flip side, while the food's generally a winner, there have been a few mentions of things not quite living up to expectations, like a burger that's a bit mild or some starters that could do with more crunch – it's not a deal-breaker, but it's good to keep in mind if you're set on something spicy. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening, especially if you're in the area after visiting the nearby priory or lighthouse; just go with the flow and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is absolutely spot on – think tasty burgers, a great selection for kids, veggies, and vegans, plus those special Sunday menus that make it feel like a proper treat.
  • The staff are so friendly and efficient; they really make you feel at home, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for the evening.
  • It's got a brilliant atmosphere with a cosy fire for those chilly nights and a spacious beer garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun when the weather plays along.
  • They've got fun events like quiz nights that add a bit of excitement and keep things lively for a good night out with mates.
  • The location is spot on too – easy to reach with free parking and right near the Whitley Bay Metro, making it ideal after a day out exploring the local sights.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a tad inconsistent, like the spicy chicken burger not packing enough heat or the naans and popadoms not being as crispy as you'd hope.
  • It might not always hit the mark on busier nights, so if you're after something specific, it's worth checking in advance to avoid any disappointments.

It's a smashin' place, good food, and nice people, both sides of the bar. The last time we went visited was just after a long holiday in France and Spain. We so enjoyed the meal and then sitting chatting with a pint and a glass of good white wine, we thought we might still be on holiday. We got so side-tracked having a good time we walked out without paying! Luckily, I'd set up a tab, so when I rang up to apologise, they'd already been able to take payment :-) A very, very friendly place

We regularly attend the Wednesday quiz night. It’s a bit of fun and keeps the old grey matter alive! This week we went earlier and used our quiz winnings to have a meal beforehand. The ultimate burger was delicious and I would absolutely have this again. Luke, Trina, Heather and Lilian are always really friendly and welcoming as are Paul and Fiona of course.

Took my son, for an impromptu meal, before dropping him off home, at the weekend. The food was very nice, although my son thought the spicy chicken burger wasn't spicy enough - fries were amazing. Great atmosphere and managed to bag a seat next to the fireplace, which was cosy. Will definitely come back again :)

Friday curry night Food was mixed: # Starters were tasty # Mains were ok but the nans were a bit wet rather than oven crisp # popadoms weren’t crispy or seasoned enough Service: Staff are super friendly & efficient Atmosphere: was great, warm & friendly The beer was the star of the evening: Wingman 👌🏻 Super convenient being walking distance but if we want a curry we’ll head down to the Ahar 🫶🏻
