About This Pub

Ah, The Beehive – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away in Whitley Bay with its stunning views and that secret garden that's just begging for a sunny afternoon pint. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food is where it truly shines; folks are raving about the roast dinners and steaks that are cooked to perfection, making it a go-to for a hearty meal that feels like a proper treat. The staff really go the extra mile too, creating that homely atmosphere where you feel like you're among friends, and it's brilliant that it's dog-friendly for those of us who like to bring the four-legged family along. That historic charm with its old beams and snug corners adds such a nice touch, perfect for unwinding after a long day. But, to keep it real, there was that one review griping about loud music and ending up in a less inviting part of the pub, which might spoil things if you're after a peaceful catch-up. Plus, with the kitchen shutting for a bit in the afternoon, it's worth timing your visit just right to avoid any disappointments. Overall, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts – the positives far outweigh the downsides, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for a balanced mix of great grub, good vibes, and a dash of character.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely top-notch – from the best roast dinners to sensational steaks, it's proper pub grub that hits the spot every time.
  • The staff are incredibly welcoming and make you feel right at home, like you're catching up with old mates; one reviewer even said they treat you like family.
  • It's got that classic historic charm with its Grade II-listed building, low wooden beams, and quaint snug areas, perfect for a cosy pint or meal.
  • Dog-friendly and with a lovely secret garden and views of St. Mary's Island, it's ideal for a relaxed day out or evening gathering.
  • High overall rating of 4.7 shows it's a crowd-pleaser, with plenty of positive vibes from recent visitors.
Cons
  • One recent review mentioned loud music and being seated in a less homely area, which could put a damper on the experience if you're after a quiet chat.
  • The kitchen closes for an hour in the afternoon (3:30pm to 4:30pm on weekdays), so you might have to plan your visit around that if you're peckish.
  • With its popularity, it can get busy, and some spots like the 'Woodshed' area aren't as cosy as the main pub, which might not suit larger groups.

The Beehive is a little gem. We haven’t been in a number of years ( used to go every week) due to ill health but what a fantastic welcoming we received on returning today for lunch. It was so lovely to see the regular staff and boss again. Honestly they treat us like family. The food was outstanding as it always has been. I can’t recommend this place enough. We definitely won’t be waiting a few years to return. Roll on next week or the week after so we can go again. To avoid disappointment I highly recommend you phone and reserve your spot as it can be extremely busy. They are dog friendly and have a private room inside for those with dogs. I don’t have any negative comments to share about this place.

It's been a very long tme since I visited The Beehive but when a friend suggested it I was open to the idea. We booked for lunch and on arrival were seated in a room with about 8 tables. The music was loud and a few of the tables were occupied but we'd passed empty tables on the way in so asked to be moved. Our server said they were busy and a gentleman (the manager?) who was passing asked if there was a problem. We explained it was a bit loud and he said there were no other tables and he would get the music turned down. Even after that we still had to raise our voices to hear each other. The menu choice was okay and we decided on the lamb and a bottle of house red. Our meals were served and we had to ask for cutlery. The lamb was a little overcooked and the house red at £25 was not great. The dessert was the best part of the meal. The puds were very good but at almost £9 for a sticky toffee pudding they were overpriced. A two course lunch for 2 with a 2* star bottle of Merlot was £94 and we left feeling very disappointed.

I can honestly say I had the best roast dinner I've ever had today and the sticky toffee pudding was to die for. We were travelling back down South and were looking for somewhere dog friendly that had good reviews. The Beehive exceeded the reviews. FANTASTIC.

2nd visit in 6 weeks so it must be good! Back at the Beehive again and fair doos I got the same, 10oz Sirloin steak. It's just top notch to be fair so had to repeat the order. Sat in the "woodshed" which isn't quite as homely as the main area of the pub, but there was 10 of us so can appreciate the change of seating. No issues at all, and food as good as always. Will be visiting again in the near future. I really must try a Sunday dinner here.

What a wonderful establishment. Quaint, quirky with bags of character. Dog friendly too. Staff and service are impeccable. Mind your head in the doorway kind of cute. Food - sensational. Atmosphere was great, even during the day. Can't wait to return of an evening when the fires will hopefully be roaring. Well worth a visit.
