About This Pub

Oh, what a lovely little find The Anchor Danbury is – it's one of those pubs that just draws you in with its warm, welcoming feel and that classic Essex charm. From what I've gathered from the buzz around, the food's a real highlight; think hearty Sunday roasts that leave you smiling, with generous portions that hit the spot just right. The staff are an absolute gem too, always on hand with a friendly chat and quick service that makes you feel looked after. It's got that perfect pub vibe for a casual get-together or even a post-walk pit stop, especially since they've got some great walking routes nearby to build up your thirst. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – you might find yourself feeling a touch pressured to order during busy spells, and while most dishes are winners, the odd one like a chicken burger could do with a bit more punch in the flavour department. Plus, with a smaller bar area, it might not be the best for just popping in for a quiet drink, and those Monday evening closures mean you'll have to plan around them. All in all, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts, offering that balance of good grub and a homely atmosphere, as long as you go in with realistic expectations.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, especially their Sunday roasts – plenty of folks rave about how tasty and well-portioned it is, leaving you feeling properly satisfied.
  • The staff are a delight; they're polite, attentive, and make you feel right at home, which really adds to the charm of the place.
  • It's a welcoming spot for everyone, including our furry friends, and the location's great for a scenic walk beforehand to work up an appetite.
  • With a solid overall vibe, it's a traditional pub that feels like a hidden gem, perfect for a relaxed meal or a cheeky pint in a moderately priced setting.
Cons
  • You might feel a bit hurried to order during peak times, like on Sundays, which can take the edge off an otherwise lovely visit.
  • Some dishes, like the chicken burger, can be just alright in terms of flavour – not every bite is a winner, so it pays to choose carefully.
  • The bar area's a tad limited, making it feel cosy to the point of being a squeeze if you're just there for drinks rather than a full meal.
  • They close up on Monday evenings, so if you're planning a mid-week outing, you'll need to check the hours to avoid disappointment.

Absolutely Cracking Pub – Worth Every Mile (and Every Bite!) The Anchor in Danbury isn’t just a pub – it’s a proper gem, the kind of place you stumble across and then wonder why you haven’t been coming for years. We popped in for lunch after reading a few glowing reviews, and let’s just say – they were spot on. We’re now proudly declaring ourselves repeat customers in the making. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with big smiles, a genuinely friendly welcome, and plenty of parking (which, let’s be honest, is already half the battle won). We parked up, strolled in, and ended up sitting outside in the sunny little garden, which felt like our own private corner of the countryside. If you’re after a peaceful bite in beautiful surroundings, this is it. Now the food – wow. I had the steak, cooked to absolute perfection, and the sauce? I could have bathed in it. My fiancée had the chicken burger and I’ve never seen her eat something so fast. I usually get a solid commentary on everything she eats (and everything I do wrong), but for a glorious five minutes, there was silence. Blissful, burger-fuelled silence. We washed it all down with a proper pint of Stella for me and a Cinzano and lemonade for her – both ice-cold and perfectly poured, (Although she had to taste test my pint for educational purposes?) Prices were more than reasonable too, especially considering the quality. The pub itself is spotless, charming, and just feels… right. Everything about it gives off that “you’re welcome here” vibe – it’s got character without trying too hard, and you can tell the team genuinely care. We drove nearly an hour to get there, and we’ll do it again. And again. And probably again after that. Honestly, if you haven’t been to The Anchor yet, stop what you’re doing and sort that out. You’ll thank me later.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here. Service was good although we felt a little rushed to order, which is understandable given it was a Sunday. Once the food arrived we were happy with the portions. My chicken burger was just ok in terms of flavour but everyone else enjoyed their meal. They are very dog friendly as a pub even with a doggy menu both in terms of hot food and pre made. We would go back again!

Lovely Sunday dinner, very polite and attentive staff. Will go back when it is warmer as then can also have a drink outside as limited bar area, as mainly catered for food

We were looking for somewhere to eat, having just arrived at our holiday accommodation in Little Baddow. Did a quick Google to see where there was close by. The Anchor came up & looked good. We tried to call for a booking but we had no signal on our phones. We decided to take a chance, and we are so glad we did. What a fabulous find. Large car park and play area out back. Lots of flowers adorn the outside, absolutely beautiful. There are lots of outside tables and dog drinking bowls, nice touch. As we went inside, we could see how busy they were. It looked doubtful that we would get a table. However, after asking the young barman, if he could squeeze us in, a table was found. We found all of the staff efficient and friendly. A great choice on the menu and specials board. All four of us enjoyed our delicious meals. Between us we had, Seabass, Salmon, Cheesy cottage pie and Sausage and mash, all very tasty. Desserts and coffee were equally fabulous. Lots of character inside with a cosy feel in the area we were seated. There was a further dining room, which we didn't see, but looked lovely and was also full of diners. We would definitely recommend The Anchor, and we will plan to return during our stay in the area. Thank you to all at The Anchor
