About This Pub
Ah, The Alma – it's one of those pubs that really sticks in your mind, isn't it? Tucked away in Newington Green, it's got this wonderful movie theme with posters and quirky bits everywhere, making every visit feel like a bit of an adventure. You'll find a solid range of drinks to suit all tastes, and the events like the Sunday quiz or Thursday jam sessions are just brilliant for getting into the spirit of things with the locals. The food, particularly those Sunday roasts, hits the spot for a hearty meal, and it's lovely how welcoming they are to dogs and groups alike. On the flip side, though, service can drag on a bit, with waits for food that might leave you peckish, and some dishes don't quite live up to the hype, coming across as rather ordinary. Still, it's a gem for a relaxed night out, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe book ahead for busier times – I'd say it's well worth a try if you're in the area!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The movie-themed decor is absolutely brilliant, with posters and memorabilia everywhere that make you feel like you're stepping into a film set – it's such a fun and unique vibe.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of beers, ales, ciders, and spirits, including local crafts and imports, perfect for settling in with mates for a good chat.
-
The events are a real highlight; the Sunday quiz is lively and engaging, and there's an open jam on Thursdays where musicians and regulars join in – it's a great way to make new friends.
-
Food-wise, the Sunday roasts are spot on, with generous portions of traditional British fare that's comforting and tasty, especially if you're popping in with the family or your furry companion since it's dog-friendly.
-
The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming, always up for a chat, which adds to that cosy, community feel in the heart of Islington.
Cons
-
Service can be a tad slow at times, with food taking ages to arrive or orders getting mixed up, which might put a dampener on your evening if you're in a rush.
-
The food is hit and miss; while the portions are hearty, it's often described as just average, without that extra wow factor you'd hope for in a pub meal.
-
It might feel a bit crowded during events or peak times, so if you're after a quiet spot, you could end up jostling for space or waiting for a table.

Movie themed pub with memorabilia and posters everywhere. Great service and a fun pub quiz on Sunday nights. There is an 'open jam' on Thursdays which is well attended by musicians and punters.
Amazing decor and vibe, which was very unique. Service was friendly, but rather slow (food took over an hour to come out and some of the orders were mixed up or slightly wrong. Waitress also kept trying to clear our table before our food had arrived).
Food was a big serving but very average. The Yorkshire pudding was cold, dry and slightly burnt/overcooked. Vegetables were overcooked and soggy. We got the Christmas special for the roast, which we were told came with Brussel sprouts and stuffing. We were incredibly disappointed when the beef roast came and the stuffing was a tiny falafel sized dry ball (see yellow circle in photo) and there were no sprouts - but at this point we were so hungry that we gave up and ate.
Mulled cider was both very sweet and very bitter (extremely strongly clove flavoured)
My favourite pub and my local also. Great food and atmosphere. Friendly staff and dog friendly also. Love watching football here with friends and a few beers. The Sunday Roasts are special.
Even after 5 years living in London, easily top 3 best pubs in the city for me. Selection of beers, service and awesomeness of décor inside are unmatched. Super chill place and perfect example of british pub. With a twist. I love this place so much.

The Alma is located in Newington Green which is halfway between Highbury and Dalston. The nearest station is Canonbury which is a gentle five minute walk away.

The Alma was built mid 19th century along with the Victorian terrace it nestles in to. The exterior of the pub is simple but elegant, the paint is a deep blue and the orange awnings add a splash of colour. Inside, the decor here is a film buff’s dream. Around the walls are posters, neon signs and even life size models from the most famous films ever to grace the silver screen. You will find yourself gazing around the pub trying to name the films and actors. The bar area is in a “U” shape with lots of comfy low level seating including a couple of cinema seats. There is a large TV screen if you fancy catching a live premiere league game.

The beer line up has a bit of something for everyone but no cask options. I had a pint of Becks Vier which you don’t see too often, my pint was excellent and reasonably priced. The food menu is a mix of British classics and tasty pizza’s. On my first visit here, my Daughter and I took advantage of the 241 deal and we really enjoyed the food. If you visit on a Sunday then sumptuous roasts are the order of the day. The service was good, the lady who served me was lovely.

The atmosphere was relaxed and chilled on Saturday lunchtime with a few locals in attendance. While I was here I watched a bit of Leicester v Palace game along with a few others. This pub has lots going on to keep you entertained, throughout the month are live band’s nights, DJ sets and jam sessions, check out their Insta for updates.
