About This Pub
Ah, The Sump in Burton – it's one of those pubs that really feels like a local gem, tucked away with a riverside vibe that's just inviting for a relaxed afternoon or evening out. I love how the staff are so approachable and eager to help, whether it's recommending a drink or accommodating allergies, which makes popping in feel like catching up with old friends. The garden's a real winner too, especially on a sunny day, and they've got a good mix of menus that cater to all tastes, plus fun events like quiz nights that keep the atmosphere buzzing. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – there have been times when the food takes forever and ends up a bit overdone, like a dry burger that doesn't quite live up to expectations, and some promotions can be a tad misleading with fine print that dampens the excitement. Still, with its community spirit and solid overall vibe, it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just maybe keep an eye on the timing and double-check any deals before you dive in.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff at The Sump are absolutely lovely – they're friendly, welcoming, and really go the extra mile to make you feel at home, especially when sorting out dietary needs or getting you seated early.
-
It's got a fantastic pub garden that's perfect for soaking up the sun with a pint and some mates, making it a great spot for casual get-togethers.
-
They offer a solid range of food and drinks, from traditional pub classics to lighter bites, with plenty of options for families and events like quiz nights to keep things lively.
-
Service is generally efficient, even when the place is buzzing, and they've got some cracking deals like 30% off mains that add a nice touch.
Cons
-
Food can sometimes take ages to arrive and might not hit the mark, like overcooked burgers or chewy pulled pork that leaves you a bit disappointed.
-
There have been a few gripes with promotions not living up to the hype, such as hidden terms that make offers less appealing than they first seem.
-
Occasionally, when things go wrong with the food, the response from the team might not quite resolve it as smoothly as you'd hope.

It a nice pub it fantastic inside and outside
When I when food too 45 mins to turn up and it was other done the bun was hard and dry burgers was burnt
Pulled pork chewy as hell.
Best part was hash brown and fry egg.
When the server came over to get the plates we told her about the food, she didn't look too bothered or sound too bothered either.
Cin artists of the highest order. Promoting father's day via the below leaflet conning people into thinking the vouchers will give 30% discount as stated but hidden away in the tiny print it states not valid fathers day weekend. You should be ashamed at such blatant lying marketing and people vote with your feet and go elsewhere where you get the truth in advertising. I have reported this to trading standards for all the good they are.
Bar staff friendly and welcoming with good advice about drinks. We had booked a table for 2 pm, but actually had arrived an hour earlier. The staff had no issue, our table was already reserved so we were seated early. Ordering is easy. Even though I had some dietary requirements, the staff member dealt with it easily and adjusted the meal for me.
The meals came out quicker than expected and were hot and on hot plates!! Beautifully cooked, we had no complaints at all. A member of staff came to check how are meals were.
I can honestly say, we have eaten at The Sump many times over the last 20 years or so and we've never had a bad experience. That said, the service and food over the last 5 years has improved again. So well done to the whole team. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and we will continue to come back!
Staff very friendly, lovely greeting, table was ready for us. Very easy to place our order, were asked if any allergies, my husband is allergic to mushrooms, it was noted down. Friendly service bringing the dinner, staff very polite. Dinner itself was lovely, hot and presented nice. I asked for an extra pot of gravy, it was brought to me straight away. Pudding was nice too. Overall, excellent meal and will definitely be back soon.. price was great value too.. £68 family of 4, 2 adults and 2 teenage children, 4 dinners and 4 puddings
Fantastic experience and the food was absolutely stunning. The staff was very friendly polite and helpful. Very busy but the service was quick. Plenty of parking with a lot of disabled parking but it gets very busy at the weekend so book a table.
