About This Pub

Ah, the Great Northern – it's one of those pubs that feels like a proper local haunt in Burton-on-Trent, you know? I've heard from a few mates that it's got this welcoming, traditional feel, especially when you're settling in for a pint and maybe catching a pool match or the footie on their big telly. The real ale, like that Burton Bridge bitter, comes highly recommended; it's just the thing for a relaxing afternoon. Being right by Burton Albion FC makes it a top choice for pre-game vibes or even for away supporters looking for a friendly spot. And let's not forget the little touches, like those cheese and onion rolls that sound absolutely scrumptious with a friendly serve from the bar. On the flip side, though, it's not without its downsides – the beer choices can be a tad limited, which might leave you wanting more variety if you're picky. Some have said the staff aren't always on top form, and on busier days, like match Saturdays, it can get a bit hectic with crowds and those plastic glasses kicking in. Still, overall, it's a solid spot with a 4.1 rating, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just go in with realistic expectations for a no-fuss pub experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a lovely, quiet traditional English pub with a great atmosphere, especially when pool matches or sports are on – makes for a relaxed spot to unwind.
  • They serve a decent pint of real ale, like the Burton Bridge bitter, which is spot on for ale enthusiasts.
  • Perfectly placed near Burton Albion FC, ideal for a pre-match beer or popping in after the game, and it's welcoming for away supporters too.
  • Friendly service from the staff in some visits, with tasty extras like cheese and onion rolls that hit the spot.
  • Features a large TV for watching the footie and a separate pool room, adding to the fun for groups.
Cons
  • The beer selection is a bit limited, so if you're after a wide variety, you might find yourself wanting more options.
  • Staff aren't always at their best, as some folks have mentioned, which can put a slight dampener on the experience.
  • It can get busy on match days, like Saturdays at lunchtime, so you might have to deal with crowds or even plastic glasses due to policies.
  • No website or online presence to speak of, which makes it trickier to check what's on or get in touch beforehand.

I had a very nice pint of Burton Bridge bitter. It's very close to Burton Albion FC. I would imagine Saturday lunchtime will be very busy come the new season.

Quiet traditional English Pub. It has a large TV ideal for sport and has a separate pool room. I visited on a Saturday when Burton Albion was playing so in line with Police Policy beer was in a plastic "glass", Limited choice of beers and staff were not the best. Excellent venue for away fans, though, due to the closeness to the football ground.
