About This Pub

Ah, Sir John Cockle in Mansfield – it's one of those pubs that really feels like the heart of the neighbourhood, you know? From what I've gathered, it's got this warm, inviting vibe where the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and the food is generally spot on, with people loving the burgers, grills, and even the steak cooked just right. The beer garden is brilliant for a summer catch-up with friends, and they've got loads going on like live music and sports, which keeps things buzzing. But, let's be honest, it's not perfect – a few mates have mentioned long waits for food that sometimes arrives cold or doesn't quite live up to the hype, and the prices can sting a bit if you're not expecting it. Overall, though, with a solid 4.1 rating from heaps of reviews, it's worth popping in for a pint and a bite; just keep your expectations in check for those busier days, and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The food is a real highlight, with tasty pub classics like banging burgers, grills, and even a superb rack of ribs that folks rave about.
  • It's got a fantastic community vibe, with regular events like pub quizzes, live music, and sports screenings that bring everyone together.
  • The beer garden is a gem, perfect for chilling out with a pint on a sunny day, whether you're with mates or the family.
  • They've got a great selection of drinks, including real ales and more, plus it's in a historic spot that adds to the charm.
Cons
  • Some folks have had issues with waits for food, like one chap who waited 45 minutes and got cold, underwhelming meals.
  • Prices can feel a bit steep for what you get, especially if the quality doesn't quite hit the mark every time.
  • There might be the odd off day with service or food temperature, which can put a dampener on an otherwise enjoyable visit.
  • Not every dish is a winner, as seen with complaints about things like cold mac and cheese or basic sides that don't impress.

A very pleasant experience was served by Ethan who prepared the finest rack of ribs and chicken combo. I will return again to see some of the live music. My kind of pub with Sports, good food and live music.

I love visiting the SJC pub for its fantastic atmosphere. There’s an uplifting spirit shared between staff and customers that really gives a sense of joy, especially on bank holidays. Then that community feel comes to life and it’s something special. Recently, I went with a couple mates just for a few quick pints over a game of pool and once again there was a warm, welcoming vibe. It’s a great spot to sit down and hang out with friends and family.

We have recently visited the Sir John Cockle for our Wednesday group meeting. The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to accommodate us, especially as we take up a whole alcove! Thankyou to Brad and Ethan for looking after us on Wednesday, lovely food, really enjoyable experience.

Worst expensive experience Ordered food and was told 20min wait not a problem ordered two Pepsi's served pepsi max. Food took 45 mins and was cold!! It was poor quality and expensive. Mac and cheese a thin layer of cold Mac rock hard garlic bread and salad was pepper and onions for £11.99. Hunters chicken vile chicken with a weird taste no cheese half the plate was salad when stated wasn't served with Chips were undercooked and cold this meal was left as it was disgusting. All in all a waste of hard earned money would give you a zero if Google let me. John cockle You are wrong I was told 20mins not 40mins, ordered pepsi not pepsi max and you didn't even fill the glass up. No one checked on the meal, a member of staff brought chips out a few minutes in to the mean before we had even eaten so that's no checking. I will be talking to Kieran your area manager regarding this
