About This Pub
Ah, the Shakespeare Tavern – it's one of those hidden gems in a quiet village that just draws you in with its old-school charm and that genuine, heartfelt welcome you don't find everywhere these days. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the owners are absolutely dedicated to keeping things lively for the locals, with live music nights and plenty of games like pool and darts to keep the fun going, all while offering decent drinks at prices that won't sting your wallet. It's got this brilliant beer garden and it's smack in the middle of some stunning countryside walks, making it a top spot if you're after a bit of fresh air followed by a cheeky pint. On the flip side, though, it's not without its downsides – there have been a few tales of it getting a bit boisterous with some less than polite company, so if you're hoping for a refined evening, it might not hit the mark. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and a sense of adventure!

-
Friendly staff and passionate owners who really care about the local community, often hosting live music and supporting social events.
-
Great entertainment options like pool, darts, and a lovely beer garden, plus it's just a short walk from beautiful countryside walks along the River Wansbeck.
-
An affordable spot with a good selection of beers and wines, ideal for unwinding without breaking the bank.
Cons
-
It can get a bit rowdy at times with some unsavoury characters hanging about, which might put off those looking for a more peaceful pint.
-
Not the best choice if you're after a family-friendly outing, as it might not suit everyone, especially with the occasional foul language.
-
The opening hours seem a tad inconsistent or limited in places, so it's worth checking ahead to avoid disappointment.

The Shakespeare tavern is as close as youll come to a back in the day traditionally welcome retreat if you feel like a good afternoon evening. Opening at 3.45pm weekdays, saturday 1.30pm and sunday 12.00pm you are guaranteed firstly, a warm welcome and brilliant afternoon or evening. I cannot reiterate how friendly. Leanne and first bar lady Sarah run a great ship and will accommodate whatever your needs if possible. Pool is free on a Wednesday (all day) and there is a dart board too if you fancy. There is a terrace/garden and kids and parents alike can enjoy the sun with plenty of seating. We had an absolutely great weekend and can't wait to join the party again. Thank you, hosts and regulars for making this a warm, welcoming experience. 5*****
Having just left this pub my Google app asks me "what did you think of The Shakespeare"... Ok, I thought...saying as you're asking....it's bloody awful. Yet another pub with a small number of foul mouthed young men occupying the bar area. Cheap...and no wonder...not one to take the parents to...once visited, instantly forgotten.
Susan Boyle often visits, wins my vote everytime. Also home of the legend Kenny Kay, It's tradition to offer him a rotten pineapple every Sunday evening.
Lovely friendly bar situated in a small village/town with the countryside a 5 minute walk away Along the River wansbeck with some lovely walks. The Shakespeare offers an array of of beets and wines and also weekend entertainment. Pool, darts also. Large beer garden out back.
A great pub ram by passionate owners that thrive to enhance the social life of the local community.
Avid supporters of live music too!
