About This Pub
Ah, Rubber Soul on Mathew Street – it's one of those places that really captures the spirit of Liverpool's iconic music scene, with its Beatles theme making every visit feel like a nod to the Fab Four. I reckon it's spot on if you're after a fun night with reasonably priced cocktails and some cracking live entertainment that gets the crowd buzzing. The atmosphere can be electric, especially when things pick up in the evenings, and it's open till the wee hours, which is ideal for extending your night out. But, to be fair, it's not all smooth sailing; I've heard from a few mates about staff who weren't the friendliest, with some experiences leaving a sour taste due to rudeness or even discriminatory vibes. There have been gripes about sloppy service too, like getting a drink that's not quite right or dealing with grubby glasses. Still, with its overall charm, it's worth giving it a go if you're in the area, just keep an eye out and go in with realistic expectations for a balanced evening.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The Beatles theme is absolutely brilliant – it's like stepping into Liverpool's musical history, with nods to John, Paul, George, and Ringo everywhere, making it a real treat for fans.
-
Drinks are fairly priced and there's often live entertainment that creates a lively, upbeat atmosphere, especially in the evenings.
-
It's open late into the night, which is perfect for a proper Liverpool night out, whether you're just popping in for a quick drink or staying for a dance.
Cons
-
Some staff members can be a bit rude or unhelpful, which really takes the shine off the experience and leaves you feeling uneasy.
-
There have been reports of discriminatory behaviour, which is deeply disappointing and something that shouldn't happen in any spot like this.
-
Service can be hit or miss, with issues like dirty glasses, incorrect drinks, or problems with payments cropping up now and then.

Not a nice experience. Some of the staff make you feel nervous with the waythey act. One didnt know how to make a cocktail and filled a vodka a limeade right to top of glass. They have an issue with contactless pay. The bar tender pointed from the bar to us sitting opposite to say payment was declined and said have to make another payment. Next day two payments have went through. Bar has been contacted but waiting for response. This happened to another couple with the same bar tender asking for them to pay again. With better trained staff and a happier working environment then this bar has potential to be great given its location.
A racist establishment. We are lucky to have cousins who are American (white) and they were allowed to be let in. We, on the other hand were visibly brown and Indian and were told the bar was closed. Pretty upsetting, even though we told them we were with them. Uncomfortable and jarring experience for all of us! Do better!!!!!!
The place is nice in general, music was nice but 2 things bothered me on May 2nd evening.
The short ginger bar-tender girl in the far end room was rude and useless. A waste of oxygen.
A girl pass-out accross the street and security just ignored her and were even aggressive with her friend who was begging for help. Not sure I had the full context but you don't treat people like that. It's not OK!
Awful.
Went for a few drinks for a friend's birthday and I have to say the live performer was the only good thing thing.
Glasses were still dirty when served, ladies toilet door was propped open with the cubicle door locks not working, one of the waiters dropped candles full of hot wax all over my friend and our table, another waiter made a scene by coming to the table minutes after I had paid for drinks to tell me the payment declined, excuse was 'the machines lose connectivity sometimes' then dragged me back to the bar to repay. Saw the same waiter doing it to another person half an hour later. Have since found out first payment went through fine and been charged twice.
Lovely late afternoon, early evening with fairly priced beer and live entertainment.
Good atmosphere. It does get busier from Friday onwards over the weekend as to be expected. Cracking entertainer, friendly staff and happy customers
