About This Pub
You know, I had a right lovely time at Rickerby Retreat the other week – it's one of those places that just makes you feel a bit special without trying too hard. The food is spot on, like those deli platters and cocktails that folks rave about, and sitting on the rooftop terrace with the river in view is just brilliant, especially on a sunny day. The staff are dead helpful too, always on hand to sort you out, which really adds to the relaxed vibe. It's got that high-end quirkiness that's perfect if you're in the mood for a chilled afternoon or evening, and if you fancy a spa treatment alongside, well, that's the cherry on top. On the downside, it's not the cheapest spot, so you might want to save it for when you're feeling flush, and it does lean more towards a sophisticated bistro feel rather than a bustling pub scene. All in all, if you're after a place to unwind with mates over good grub and drinks, it's well worth a go, but just keep in mind it might not be your everyday local haunt.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely delicious, with scrumptious options like deli platters, brunch, and afternoon tea that really hit the spot.
-
Service is top-notch – friendly and attentive staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome, like when they helped move tables for a bit of shade.
-
The rooftop terrace offers stunning views over the River Eden, making it a brilliant spot for a relaxing drink or meal in the sunshine.
-
It has a laid-back, high-end quirky atmosphere that's perfect for unwinding, whether you're enjoying cocktails or just soaking up the calm vibes.
-
They've got fantastic spa treatments on offer, so you can pair your visit with a massage or facial for a full day of indulgence.
Cons
-
It's on the pricey side, which might make it feel a bit steep for everyday outings and better suited to special treats.
-
More of a bistro-spa hybrid than a traditional pub, so if you're after a lively, boisterous crowd, it could come across as a tad too relaxed or upscale.
-
Opening hours are a bit limited, with the place closed one day a week, so you might need to plan around that for your visit.

With the fabulous weather this weekend I visited Bistro on Saturday and Sunday with the benefit of the roof being open on the terrace. What a delight it was to spend time there and the attentive service was first class as was the delicious food. Carlisle is lucky to have such a wonderful venue. I shall be back again soon.
This is the second time I have reviewed this place and it did not disappoint.
Absolutely love it here, the high-end quirkiness, the laid back atmosphere, the decor is beautiful (see previous photos) and the food is just scrumptious.
This time I took my other half and we had a Deli sharing platter. I could gush about almost every item on that board. The bread, which I was told was baked fresh on the premises, was to die for.
Best Mocha I have had in a long time that I didn't make myself. Even my other half liked his coffee and he is more fussy over coffee than I am.
Can not fault this place. Yes it might have been a bit more expensive than some cafes but the food and service is absolutely worth it.
We will most definitely be back!!
Went for some food after visiting the spa. Again very nice and friendly staff. Decent prices, plenty of food 🍱 and delicious 😋.
Nice view from the 1st floor, relaxing and calming atmosphere.
Absolutely will recommend the place and visit again.
Lovely afternoon drinks in the sunshine. Staff were very accommodating when we asked to move tables into the shade. We enjoyed a portion of the nachos to share.
Absolutely delicious selection of cocktails on a 2 for 1 offer on Thursday nights from 5-8pm currently. Accompanied by the deli platter as none of us had eaten beforehand, which included a variety of bread, cheese, chutney, olives, crisps, quiche and sausage rolls, which was also very good. Staff were very attentive.
