About This Pub

Oh, what a gem Retreat on the Row is – it's one of those places that just warms your heart from the get-go. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is where it really shines; think mouthwatering tapas and flavour-packed dishes that have people like Sharon and Keith absolutely raving, saying it's flawless and some of the best they've had. Pair that with the super-friendly service from the owners, who sound like a right welcoming pair, and you've got yourself a spot that feels like a proper cosy night out. The atmosphere is spot on too, all relaxed and homely, with an outside area that's perfect for soaking up the sun if you're lucky with the weather. But, let's be fair, it's not without its quirks – the opening times can be a bit hit and miss, so you might find yourself planning around that, and without a website, it's not the easiest to keep tabs on. Still, for anyone in the area or on a canal walk like Sallyann mentioned, it's well worth a visit; just go with an open mind and you'll likely leave with a smile, eager to return for more of those wonderful flavours and good vibes.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely top-notch, with standout dishes like the Potato Bravas that reviewers rave about – it's a real treat for anyone popping in for a bite.
  • The service is warm and welcoming, run by a lovely couple who make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's got a cracking atmosphere, all laid-back and inviting, perfect for a relaxed evening with friends or a casual meal.
  • They've a great selection of drinks, including locally produced rum and delicious Sangria, adding to the charm of the place.
  • The outside bar area looks spot on for a sunny day, making it an ideal spot for al fresco enjoyment if the weather plays along.
Cons
  • The opening hours can be a bit unpredictable, with the place only open five days a week and varying times, so it's worth double-checking before heading out.
  • There's no website or online presence listed, which might make it tricky to get the latest info or book ahead if you're not local.
  • Being a small venue, it might feel a tad cosy when it's busy, so if you're after more space, it could leave you wanting.

A 'Little Gem' of a place on our canal walk . We are not local to area, from kent actually, but our walk when we visit with friends. Last visit almost 2 years ago and The bistro has always been on our thoughts for our next trip and we have returned. So friendly welcoming and a very special place to stop off and unwind. Next visit when ever it will be? We have promised it will be lunch too as the food looks amazing. Great place and a must place to be .

Found this place by chance after staying in Shireoaks. Owners are a lovely couple who are very attentive and welcoming. The Tapas were simply amazing especially the Potato Bravas, best I've ever tasted and we've had a few! Small bar with range of drinks and some locally produced Rum. A must visit if in area, we will be back.

Second visit to this little gem of a place. The food is to due for, the Sangria delicious and the welcome warm and inviting. We felt very comfortable, lovely laid back atmosphere, and when we return we will stay longer and make a proper night of it. Wonderfully combined flavours, unusual small plates of food that make you sit there and plan what you will try on your next visit, knowing full well you will struggle to not to chose exactly the same as this time as it was so scrummy. Keep on doing what you are doing, because you are getting it so right ❤️
