About This Pub

Ah, Redhouse in Newcastle is one of those classic pubs that just draws you in with its timeless charm and vibrant energy. I mean, it's the city's oldest and most iconic venue, so every corner has a story waiting to be discovered, whether you're sipping on a well-poured pint or tucking into one of their mouth-watering pies – the steak and ale one is a real standout, paired with creamy mash and peas. The team behind the bar are always up for a chat, adding to that genuine, friendly vibe, and it's spot on for dog lovers or anyone wanting to enjoy the outside area on a nice day. Plus, kicking off early for match days makes it ideal for a casual catch-up with friends. On the downside, it does fill up quickly, so you might have to plan your visit or brace for a bit of a queue, and if you're not in the mood for pies, the options can feel a tad straightforward. All in all, it's a top-notch spot that captures the heart of Newcastle, and I'd say it's well worth a stop for anyone looking for an authentic pub experience – just go with the flow and you'll have a great time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic atmosphere is absolutely charming – it's Newcastle's oldest pub, packed with character and stories that make every visit feel special.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of beers, including great choices for non-drinkers, and the pies are an absolute delight, with options like steak and ale that hit the spot every time.
  • The staff are so welcoming and friendly, making you feel right at home from the get-go.
  • It's dog-friendly with a spacious outside area, perfect for enjoying a pint on a sunny day or bringing your furry friend along.
  • Opens early for match days, which is brilliant for meeting up with mates for a pre-game chat and a refreshing drink.
Cons
  • It can get really busy, especially during peak times or on match days, so you might end up waiting for a table or need to book ahead.
  • The menu focuses heavily on pies and simple pub grub, which is lovely if that's what you're after, but it might feel a bit limited if you're in the mood for something more varied.

Beautiful old pub with an interesting interior decoration, the kind you just sit and look around as you sup your pint. We dropped in here with friends and enjoyed a few pints whilst taking in the place. Interesting history! Beer was great, great range of choice and a lovely welcome by the bar staff. Highly recommend!!!

Great place for some brilliant pie and mash. Easy menu, quick service, and you pay at the bar when you order, simple. Beef and brown ale pie was delicious with creamy mash, mushy peas and parsley sauce. Also had the sticky toffee pudding which was delicious. Absolutely recommend this place!

The pies are so good here this is my second visit. I had the spinach and chickpea pie, mouth watering stuff! Fantastic location overlooking the Tyne Bridge. Busy during the day so you might want to arrive for a earlier lunch

First time trying here today on the restaurant week deal. It was a pie of choice a type of potato of choice, a pea choice and a sauce choice. We both went for the steak & ale pie, buttery mash, mushy peas, I went for the meat gravy and then my husband went for the cheese sauce. It was £20, usually £26 for everything without the restaurant week deal. Quality was 10/10 and i can’t wait to come back and try other flavours

This place can get busy but you can book tables. Great Pie Mash and peas, probably didn't need the sides. Great selection of beers including alcohol free. Pudding is worth a look too 😁👍
