About This Pub

Ah, the Red Lion in Withington – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper neighbourhood gem in Manchester. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, it's got this warm, inviting atmosphere in a historic building that makes you want to settle in for the evening. The food really stands out; their seasonal menus and those legendary Sunday roasts are packed with fresh flavours and come at a fair price, especially with deals like the pub lunch for two. Pair that with a refreshing pint in the spacious beer garden, and you've got a perfect spot for a summer day or a family get-together – and it's even dog-friendly, which is always a plus. The staff often get praised for being polite and creating a fun vibe, like during their Wednesday quizzes that keep things entertaining. But, to keep it real, there have been a couple of slip-ups with service, like one person getting the wrong drink and a bit of a rude remark, which isn't ideal. Overall, though, with a solid 4.1 rating from plenty of folks, it's worth a visit if you're nearby – just go in with an open mind and maybe book ahead for those popular roasts. It's a solid choice for a laid-back night out, balancing the good times with a few things to watch out for.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are generally friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • The food is spot on, especially those Sunday roasts with bottomless gravy and Yorkshire puds – they're a real highlight and great value too.
  • It's a cosy spot with a historic vibe, perfect for catching up with mates over a pint in the beer garden on a sunny day.
  • Family and dog-friendly, so it's ideal if you're popping in with the kids or your furry friend.
  • They've got fun events like the Wednesday quiz, which creates a lively atmosphere and keeps things interesting.
Cons
  • There was that one off incident where a bar person messed up a drink order and made a cheeky comment, which left a bit of a sour taste.
  • It's not the cheapest option around, so you might want to budget a tad more for your night out.
  • Service can sometimes feel inconsistent, based on a few experiences shared by others.

Bar staff accidentally served me an alcoholic drink when I'd asked for the non-alcoholic version, not a big deal it happens. Went back to the bar to swap it and the guy behind the bar smirked, looked at me strangely when handing the correct drink over and said "there you go princess". Bar was pretty busy, maybe trying to get a laugh from other customers. Very odd reaction as I hadn't made any fuss and to be honest it felt homophobic. Weird experience, wont be back.

We just called in on the of chance after visiting our friend at Christies. We had a lovely meal, I would say that was the best Sunday roast that I've ever had in a pub. My husband really enjoyed his fish too, we would definitely visit again

Good decent pub with good food and drinks Definitely not the cheapest place but it's nice to visit especially to sit outside on a summers day. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit but if you're nearby I will definitely recommend going.
