About This Pub

Ah, The Railway – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a second home, tucked away on Lapwing Lane in West Didsbury. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's got this lovely, snug vibe with wood-panelled bars and smaller rooms that make you want to settle in for the evening. The drinks are a real highlight; they're serving up Joseph Holt's superb bitter and a great range of options at prices that won't break the bank, plus fun deals like shots or prosecco offers that add a bit of excitement to your night out. I love how it's all about that community feel – whether it's cheering on the footie with mates, tapping your foot to live music, or joining in a pub quiz for a laugh. The staff seem genuinely caring, going out of their way to help, like reserving tables or attempting to find that elusive sports channel, which really makes you appreciate the effort. On the flip side, though, it's not without its downsides; the pub quiz can sometimes be a bit disorganised, with tales of rude hosts or struggles to snag a seat, which might put you off if you're planning a big group outing. And let's be honest, if pizza's not your thing, the food menu is a bit on the slim side, so you might end up heading elsewhere for a proper bite. Overall, it's a solid choice for us pub lovers looking for a friendly spot in Manchester – just keep in mind it shines brightest when you're up for the lively atmosphere, but it might not be ideal for a quiet, fancy dinner. Give it a go if you're in the area; it's got that heartwarming charm that keeps people coming back.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely cosy and welcoming, like stepping into a proper local hideaway where you can relax and chat with mates.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of well-priced beers, lagers, and cask ales, plus some cracking specials like Fizz Friday that make it easy on the wallet.
  • It's buzzing with community spirit, hosting live music, pub quizzes, and sports screenings on big TVs – perfect for catching a match or enjoying up-and-coming bands.
  • The staff are really friendly and go the extra mile, as seen in stories of them reserving tables for groups or trying their best to sort out any issues.
  • It's dog-friendly and has a laid-back vibe, making it a top spot for a casual get-together or even just popping in for a coffee during the day.
Cons
  • There can be hitches with events like the pub quiz, where getting a table might be a scramble and things don't always run smoothly, leaving you a bit frustrated.
  • Food options are pretty limited to just pizza, which might not satisfy if you're after a more varied menu for a proper meal.
  • Opening hours vary a fair bit by day, so you might find it tricky to pop in early on some weekdays, and occasionally, like with sports channels, not everything's available when you want it.
  • It can get busy on match days or for popular events, which might make it feel a tad overcrowded if you're not there early enough.

I did not eat here, but I would have done I wanted to listen ans watch the rugby. The assistant tried every sport channel she had and it was not there But well done for trying

Easily the best pub in West Didsbury. Stacey and Mark have taken a quiet, declining boozer and transformed it in to a thriving, beloved cornerstone of the local area. They show popular sports events, regularly cook up free food for everyone, have the second-best quiz in South Manchester and have created one of the most welcoming environments I've ever experienced in a pub. Cannot recommend highly enough.

I love the cozy atmosphere there so picked it for my birthday drinks. I was waiting for friends there before going to a restaurant nearby, and after chatting was asked how large my group was and was guided to an appropriate group of tables and they were reserved for us to be available when we got back! The beer selection is excellent. Try the Sixex before the brewery takes it away for the summer, and give the Smooth a go if you're after a low % option, which might be a good idea if you've just had a Sixex.

Nice pub, decent selection, didn't eat anything but i had an experience here thats put me off going back. Went in for the pub quiz. I rang up earlier to check it was on and the guy on the phone told be I'd best get there an hour or so before to guarantee a table. Fair enough, no worries, must get busy, typical for a decent pub quiz. So I showed up an hour before, wasn't too busy yet so I got a pint a found a decent small (4 person tops) table whilst I waited for my mates to arrive who were about 5mins behind me. After a couple of mins one of the barmaids came over with two people who i think had just walked in and told me I had to move because there was four of them (there was only 2 of them there) and my group was only 3. There was no reservation or anything, the barmaid explained that they get busy and have to make the most of the space. To clarify the pub was not that busy yet and there were definitely other seats available in the pub. I didnt really want to get into any sort of confrontation so I agreed to move although I think the people who my table was being given to could tell that it didnt sit right and they were even apologetic. So the barmaid moved me to another table. One of those small round ones with stools around it (only 2 stools, she kindly pulled up some kind of school chair for our 3rd person). Right next to the fruit machine and conveniently just out of sight if where the quiz host is stood. So I went from showing up an hour early, spending my money and bagging a decent table to what was probably the worst table in the pub. I could tell she was seating people as the pub did fill up a bit more and can appreciate that maybe a bit of people managment is required. However making us move table an hour ahead of the quiz for the sake of squeezing an extra person in who wasn't even in the pub yet has definitely rubbed me the wrong way and if there was a set of unwritten rules about pub etiquette, I feel like this has broken them ha. Anyways, rant over, not sure if i'll go back but if I do I'll only be showing up 5 mins before the quiz in full expectation that some other poor sod is moved table to accomodate my arse.

I told Ic and Flic that this was once a John Smith pub where a mate got a six hour New Year lock in circa 1977. Now, thankfully Joe Holts. Much changed in the last 50 years but the Holts bitter is superb. Left last bar at Everton 2 - 0 MUFC. 2 - 2 as I walked into a cheering pub. Proper pub. Loved it.
