About This Pub

Ah, Purkins – it's one of those unassuming neighbourhood gems that you stumble upon and end up chatting about with your mates over a round. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this brilliant community feel where the bar staff and regulars make you feel right at home from the get-go, sharing stories and laughs like you're all old pals. The quiz nights sound like a proper hoot, adding a fun twist to your evening out, and it's perfect for nipping in for a cold one on a warm day. But let's be straight, it's not without its quirks – the place is tiny, so if you're not keen on cosy crowds, it might feel a bit tight. Plus, it's got that vintage charm that some love and others find a bit dated, and don't forget, it's cash only, which can be a faff if you're out of coins. All in all, if you're after a genuine, down-to-earth pub experience in Mitcham, Purkins delivers the goods with a smile, but it's worth knowing what you're in for to avoid any surprises.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff and regulars are incredibly friendly, making you feel like part of the gang right away – it's that warm, welcoming vibe that keeps you coming back.
  • It's a great spot for a quick, chilled-out pint, especially on a sunny day when you can enjoy a cold drink in the shade.
  • They host fun quiz nights once a month, which add a bit of excitement and make for a good laugh with mates.
  • The atmosphere is proper cosy and community-focused, like stepping into a real local haunt where everyone knows each other.
Cons
  • It's quite a small space, the tiniest pub some folks have ever seen, so it can get a bit cramped if it's busy.
  • Feels a tad old-fashioned, almost like going back to the 70s, which might not appeal if you're after something more modern.
  • They only take cash, no cards, which is a bit of a nuisance in this digital age – always need to remember to hit the ATM first.
  • The toilets are on the shabby side, not exactly up to scratch, so you might want to keep expectations realistic.

A good fun night enjoyed. They run a nice relaxed quiz once a month usual the first Monday of the month.

The friendliest pub i've ever been to in London! Not 5 minutes into entering the building the bartender and other patrons began chatting with us about the history of the pub and its regulars, immediately welcoming us to their little family. Everyone knows everyone and the environment feels so warm and familiar it's more akin to chatting with friends in your living room than strangers in a bar (For my fellow Boston residents it was like witnessing an episode of Cheers in real time). Can't wait to go back!

It's quite a tiny place , well the smallest pub I have ever been in. Definitely a local pub quite old fashioned , well very like going back to the 70s . The bar lady was OK, I suppose , only takes cash , no credit card accepted , very odd . The mens toilet consisted of a lock up very shabby indeed. Carpet in bar area grey , and grubby . So not a gourmet pub , no food at all. Very strange. Rather like an Alice's in wonderland novel , but the pub itself gets smaller . Language at the bar was x rated. To fit in , you have to be local and hard as nuts. Very strange and disconcerting. But I did quite like it , I suppose when you get excepted then your see quite lovely people , behind the mask of Untrustfulness .

Put it like this, I wouldn't go in Purkins fully suited and booted with your mate Sebastian to discuss your recent holiday in the South of France. It's not that kind of place. It's a real local with real locals and it wears its heart on its sleeve. I used to pop in on a Friday occasionally to take in their Happy Hour. Fascinating place and worth a look. Note: the description of 'wine bar' is euphemistic at best.
