About This Pub

Ah, Post Office Vaults – it's one of those places that really stands out as a gem in Birmingham's bustling scene, especially if you're into your beers. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, most folks absolutely rave about the wide array of ales and ciders; you've got regulars like Kinver First Class Stamp and a rotating selection of guests that keep things fresh and exciting. It's that kind of spot where you can dive into everything from crisp lagers to rich stouts, and the fact that it's an independent freehouse adds a nice, authentic touch. The location is spot on too, tucked away but easy to find near New Street, making it ideal for a quick stop or a longer session with mates. On the flip side, it's a bit of a shame they don't offer food, so you might end up nipping out for a Greggs pasty or something to pair with your drink, but hey, at least they make it easy to bring your own. From the reviews, it seems like the vibe is generally warm and inviting, with people appreciating the old-school charm and the option to make it your own – though there was that one instance where a group felt a bit unwelcome due to age checks, which is fair enough for a pub, but it does highlight that it's not always smooth sailing. Overall, it's got a solid 4.4 rating, which speaks volumes, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after a proper pint in a relaxed setting, just keep those little niggles in mind for a balanced night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – they've got up to eight real ales on tap, plus a massive range of foreign beers from places like Belgium and Germany, making it a real haven for anyone who loves a good pint.
  • It's in such a handy spot right in the heart of Birmingham, just a couple of minutes from New Street Station, so it's perfect for popping in after work or while exploring the city.
  • You can bring your own food and they'll sort you out with plates and cutlery, which is a lovely touch for turning a quick drink into a proper meal.
  • The atmosphere feels welcoming and traditional, like stepping into a hidden gem where you can relax and chat over a beer, with plenty of positive vibes from fellow visitors.
Cons
  • They don't serve any food on site, so if you're after a bite to eat, you'll need to grab something from nearby and bring it along, which might not suit everyone.
  • There have been a few grumbles about strict door policies, like turning away groups with anyone under 18, which could make for an awkward start to your night out.
  • The overall beer range has taken a hit from things like Covid and Brexit, dropping from over 365 varieties to 212, so it's not quite as extensive as it used to be, though it's still one of the best in the area.

Walked in the door eight of us and only for my friends dughter to be turn away has over 18's only. Came down the stairs and were quickly approached by a bartender to leave. others only stayed for 15 mins, the entire time the same bartender was staring at them, shaking his head.

Lovely little gem of a pub! Well worth a visit if you like a traditional pint. Two ways in, one from Penfield Street, and the other from New Street - right next door to Greggs. You can even take your own food down into the vaults, and they will provide a plate, knife and fork!

Great wee hidden gem in Birmingham city centre. Especially if you like Belgian and German beers. 🍺

Cracking hidden pub in Birmingham, proper old school boozer but felt equally welcoming! Plenty of choice in ales, lots of seating (and security cameras too 😂, not that we were up to no good) Definitely come for a pint or 3 and enjoy.

Great pub in the basement. Lookout for the door next to Greggs. Excellent range of ales and ciders. Only pub snacks available but you can take your own food in to eat with a drink.
