About This Pub

Ah, Penny Black – it's one of those pubs in Wrexham that you might stumble upon for a casual evening, open from 6pm right through to 4am every day, which is just ace if you're in the mood for a proper sesh. From the chats I've seen, it's got that warm, welcoming feel with friendly locals who make you feel right at home, and it's clearly a hit for events like Focus Wales, where people have had a whale of a time. The prices are generally pretty reasonable, so you can enjoy a pint without worrying too much about the wallet. But, on the flip side, a few have grumbled about drinks like cans costing £4.50, which stings a bit, and if you're a rock or metal fan, you might be disappointed by the music jumping from heavy tunes to something like Adele – it's a shame they don't mix it up more for different crowds. All in all, it's worth popping in if you're local or visiting, but go in with your eyes open; it's got plenty of heart, but it won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's open until 4am every night, which is brilliant for those epic nights out that go on forever.
  • The locals are really friendly, making it a welcoming spot to chat and have a laugh.
  • It's got a great vibe for events like Focus Wales, as some have raved about it being a top venue.
  • Overall, it's inexpensive, so you won't break the bank on a few drinks.
Cons
  • Some folks have moaned about the drinks being a bit pricey, like £4.50 for a can – ouch!
  • The crowd can be quite young, which might not suit if you're after a more mature atmosphere.
  • The music selection can be hit or miss, with complaints about switching from rock and metal to pop, leaving some feeling a bit deflated.
  • It doesn't always hit the mark on atmosphere, especially if you're hoping for a dedicated night for certain tastes like over-30s rock events.

As someone who’s not from the area who will only listen to rock and metal.. I was told this is pretty much the only place. Full of young. Kids and no atmosphere, would be ideal if they did an over 30’s rock and metal night. Was pretty sad for the music to switch from slipknot to Adele.. I mean who wants to listen to that drivel. Wrexham is by far the most disappointing place I’ve ever been to in the uk for metal and rock venues. I haven’t even really came across any alternative market places for clothing, yet I see so many alt people out and about in Wrexham. It’s such a shame as there’s a huge market for it, and people are going without. I wouldn’t waste my money if you’re over 18 going here. Please do something for older people who want to not listen to chart drivel on a night out.
