About This Pub

Ah, the Old Swan on Abbot Street in Wrexham – it's one of those local gems that really pulls you in with its warm, homely vibe. I've heard from a few folks that the staff are just brilliant, always up for a chat and making you feel right at ease, which is spot on for a proper pub experience. The pints are fairly priced too, and there's a decent selection to choose from, plus that pool table is a right laugh for whiling away the hours. After their refurb, it's got a fresh, inviting atmosphere that's perfect for a casual get-together or a bit of banter over drinks. On the downside, though, some have mentioned the beer not always hitting the mark – a bit gassy or off-form now and then, which is a shame when you're after that perfect pint. The music can be a bit loud or not quite what you'd fancy, leaving you wishing for something a tad more varied. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening in Wrexham, but it's worth going in with an open mind to enjoy the highs and navigate the lows – just like any good night out with friends!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making every visit feel like catching up with old mates.
  • Pints are reasonably priced with a good selection, perfect for a budget-friendly night out.
  • They've got a well-maintained pool table and other games, adding a fun, interactive vibe to the evening.
  • The atmosphere is lively and charming, especially after their recent refurbishment, with plenty of banter and a cosy feel.
Cons
  • Some beers can be a bit off, like overly gassy or not quite right, which might put a dampener on things.
  • The music volume can get a tad overwhelming at times, and it's not always to everyone's taste – no thrash tunes here!
  • It can feel a bit quiet or deserted on occasion, making the place seem less buzzing than you'd hope.

Pints were nice and reasonably priced. They had a good condition pool table to play on with a £5 deposit, as most places in town have. Stacey behind the bar was welcoming, friendly and very polite. Would recommend.

I can’t fault the food - this is a bar, not a restaurant 😁 We are celebrating our honeymoon in Wrexham here from the US and ended up on an inadvertent pub crawl on Saturday night. We stopped into the Cross Foxes and it was…dull and not interesting so we walked back out. I told my husband that we should check out The Old Swan if for no other reason than the entrance is down an alley and I loved all the irreverent writing on the windows and walls. Upon entering we were greeted by Alicia behind the bar. This place is small. It’s a bar. It doesn’t pretend to be anything else. We parked ourselves at the corner and ordered drinks. 7 HOURS later, we finally left after meeting much of the family that owns the Old Swan including Alicia’s sister and their aunt, Karen. My husband used to work in the restaurant industry and had a lively conversation with Karen about the bar lines. The lines are crystal clear and are cleaned every week. If you have worked in bars in the US, many of them smell sour from all the spilled booze that isn’t properly cleaned. There was no such smell here and we could tell that everyone takes pride in the place. There were waves of patrons who would come and go over the evening, regulars and strangers alike. By the end of the evening, we felt like family ourselves and we know that this will be our “regular” spot this week and on future visits.

I'm comparing this to the Old Swan of many years ago, but this place has changed for the worse. Friendly service but beer was foul and overly gassy. Music was insanely loud for a deserted bar. The few people there chose to sit in the freezing cold in the yard rather than damage their hearing inside. Several customers turned around and left a soon as they walked in.

Hidden away, this little gaff is sound, good selection of pints, a pool table, and a old school racing game no one has ever won ever

Nice wee pub. Really friendly staff. Few pints and pool. Had a good night out. Don't agree with there no thrash music though 🥺 but I suppose it's not everyone's cup of tea😄
