About This Pub
Ah, On the Rocks – what a gem in Rugby for something a bit different from the usual pub grub. I have to say, the real highlight is that lava stone setup; it's such a clever idea, letting you cook your steak or fish right at the table to your exact preference. The food itself is top-notch, with fresh local ingredients that make everything taste that much better – I've heard folks going on about those triple-cooked chips and the beef dripping gravy, and I can see why. It's got that warm, family-run feel in a historic Victorian building, which adds a nice touch for celebrations or just a relaxed evening out. The staff are brilliant too, always on hand to guide you through the menu without making it feel overwhelming. On the flip side, though, it does get a bit hazy with smoke from the cooking, and I've seen a few mentions of meals not being as warm or seasoned as they'd like, which is a pity. Plus, it's not the cheapest night out; that £120 for two can sting a bit, so maybe save it for a special treat rather than a casual midweek pint. All in all, if you're up for an interactive dining adventure with great food, it's worth a go – just keep those points in mind for a balanced experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The unique lava stone cooking lets you cook your meat, fish, and veggies just how you like them, making every meal feel personal and fun.
-
They use fresh, locally sourced ingredients, which really shines through in the quality of the food – think tender steaks and delicious sides like triple-cooked chips.
-
It's a family-run spot in a charming Victorian building, giving it that cosy, independent vibe that's perfect for special occasions or a night out.
-
The service is spot on; staff are attentive and happy to explain the menu, making newcomers feel right at home.
-
With a solid 4.7 rating, it's clear folks are raving about the experience, especially for birthdays or treating loved ones.
Cons
-
It can get a bit smoky from the stone cooking, which might make things uncomfortable if the windows aren't opened up.
-
Some dishes, like steaks, have been reported as not quite warm enough or lacking in seasoning, which is a shame for such fresh ingredients.
-
The prices add up quickly – you're looking at around £120 for two courses and a bottle of wine for two, so it might not be the most budget-friendly option.
-
The space feels a tad small, which could make it feel cramped on busier evenings.

Really good food, probably the best I’ve had in rugby! The area is a little small and the windows could do with being opened as it gets quite smoky from the stone cooking.
It was a very nice birthday meal treat but for 2 courses and a bottle of wine was roughly £120 for 2 people.
That being said it was lovely food and my partner enjoyed his birthday meal there. It's a nice experience overall.
Really nice place with good food. Lovely staff. Ordered rib eye steak (medium rare) was okay but was really cold inside, was expecting to be in room temperature and not salted enough (like not salted at all) but meat quality was really good.
Something a little bit different. Food quality steak that we cooked ourselves on a hot rock. Basic but excellent quality. The service was informal but effective... They took the time to explain the slightly unorthodox menu and ordering approach and were attentive during the meal. If you are looking for a sociable, fun evening, then this is certainly worth giving a go.
I visited this restaurant with my boyfriend for his birthday.
Normally I'm not really a meat eater and especially no steak but I booked it for my boyfriends birthday because he loves steak.
But after that visit, I couldn't stop thinking about the food there because it was so good and I also enjoyed the Fillet Steak that I had so much! It was such a nice experience cooking your own meat on the lava stone and it was so much fun to do so. I can't wait to come back to eat there again.
Service was amazing, very welcoming and helpful. They explained how everything works and gave us suggestions on how to handle the lava stone.
A little nice extra that they offer is if you book a table on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday after 6PM, you're able to book it with 15% off all your Mains which is a nice plus. But either way, the food is definitely worth the money.
When you enter the building you get into a kind of Pub/Bar only for drinks and you have to go upstairs to get to the restaurant, so don't be irritated at first.
I can definitely recommend this place to all the steak lovers or for people who like to give it a try, as you see, even if I don't really like to eat steak I ended up loving it.
