About This Pub

Ah, the Old Halfway House – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Horbury, Wakefield, where you can pop in for a relaxed catch-up with mates. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the place nails that cosy, historic vibe with its welcoming service and a menu that's often a hit, especially if you're after something hearty like their famous chips or a well-cooked Philly Steak sandwich. The outdoor seating is perfect for a sunny afternoon pint, and the live entertainment adds a fun twist to evenings out. But, to keep it real, it's not all smooth sailing – there have been grumbles about inconsistent food, like meals turning up burnt or with portions that don't quite match the price tag, which could leave you a bit disappointed. Overall, it's a solid choice for a good night if you're in the area, as long as you go in with an open mind and maybe stick to the crowd-pleasers.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming and cosy, making it a brilliant spot to unwind with friends over a pint or a meal.
  • The food is generally spot-on, with rave reviews for dishes like the scampi and chips, Philly Steak sandwich, and those homemade onion rings – they're a real treat!
  • Service is warm and welcoming, with staff who go out of their way to make you feel at home, which really adds to the community vibe.
  • Outdoor seating is a lovely touch for enjoying a sunny day, letting you soak up the fresh air while tucking into some grub.
  • They've got regular live entertainment, like singers, which livens things up and makes for a great night out.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss; one experience had burnt chips and rock-hard peas, which put a real dampener on the meal.
  • Portions might feel a bit skimpy in some cases, like that steak and kidney pie that was tiny and overpriced – it left a bad taste, literally.
  • Prices are on the moderate side, but when the food doesn't live up to expectations, it can feel a tad steep for what you get.

Disgusting ! Chips burnt and rock hard. Peas Rock hard. Steak and kidney pie only two and a golf inches in diameter and only contained 1cm cube of steak and two miniscule morsels of of kidney. Ate the tiny non existent pieces of meat and left everything else. And the price was extortionate.

I have passed this pub many times but not been in until now. Had a very warm welcome and ordered Philly Steak sandwich and chips. The steak was perfectly cooked and the sandwich was lovely. The star of the show was the amazing chips, I don't know how they cook them but they were fantastic. My friend also enjoyed her fish finger sandwich and also commented on the chips. Unfortunately there were only another two people dining which is a shame as the standard was high and perfectly priced

A lovely, quaint little place with a cosy atmosphere and a great outside seating area. The service was friendly and helpful and the food arrived quickly and well presented. Everything tasted great and I heavily recommend the homemade onion rings. If you are looking for a relaxing place for a nice lunch, I would definitely check this place out.

This place is amazing for a sunny day. We wanted a pub lunch, and that's what we got. Didn't look like much from the outside but go around the back, and there's plenty of places to sit. The place is clean, the staff are friendly. We ordered sharing nachos to start with, followed by chicken and bacon burger and hunters chicken (see photo's attached). Portion sizes and the quality of food were great. Food came out pretty quickly, and the service was great as it was busy as well. The dessert was a ok, only thing that let it down was the fudge cake itself was a little over done and dry on the edges but there was plenty of cream and chocolate sauce to sort that out. Overall, this was a pleasant surprise how nice it was, and I'll definitely be visiting again.
