About This Pub

Ah, the Morning Star – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper neighbourhood favourite, you know? Tucked away on Manchester Road, it's got this lovely mix of old-school charm from its 1890s building and some modern tweaks inside, making it a comfy spot to settle in for a pint or a meal. I love how they've nailed the food side of things; there's a solid range of options from hearty pub classics to fresh salads and even vegan choices, and it's all at prices that won't break the bank – makes it ideal for a casual catch-up with friends. The staff are genuinely top-notch, always up for a chat and making sure you're looked after, which really adds to that warm, community atmosphere. Plus, with entertainment like fortnightly quizzes, karaoke on weekends, and big screens for the footy, there's always something going on to keep the energy up. And don't forget the spacious beer garden; it's a treat for outdoor sipping, especially if you're with a well-behaved dog in tow. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few folks mention that the food isn't always perfect – things like roast potatoes coming out a bit pale and underdone, or some meat being fatty around the edges, which is a shame when the rest is so good. It can also feel a touch cold inside on certain days, and during peak times, the service might lag a bit because they could do with more hands on deck. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed night out, and with that high 4.5 rating, most people seem to have a great time – just go in with realistic expectations, and you'll likely leave with a smile.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is spot on with a great variety, from classic pub grub to curries and vegan options, and it's all at really reasonable prices.
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and friendly, making you feel right at home with their warm service.
  • It's got a fantastic community feel, with regular quizzes, karaoke nights, and live sports on big screens – perfect for a good laugh with mates.
  • The beer garden is a brilliant spot for chilling out, especially on a sunny day, and it's even dog-friendly for those who bring their furry friends along.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be hit or miss, like undercooked roast potatoes or fatty bits on the meat, which might leave you a bit disappointed.
  • It can get a tad chilly inside at times, so you might want to wrap up if you're popping in during cooler weather.
  • Service can feel a bit stretched during busier moments, with not quite enough help around to keep things running smoothly all the time.

Not a bad Sunday roast , mine could have been seasoned better but I don't know if it's a chef or pre prepared foods but nevertheless it was reasonable and the service was good all the staff were friendly and it has a family atmosphere

Good value for both food and drinks. Even accept well behaved dogs! Could have been warmer as was slightly chilly.

We ate downstairs & had a superb homemade burger amongst other things from their own butchers. Be aware of the service charge. The pub has a very traditional feel with a large oval wooden bar, uniformed waiters, high ceilings & immaculate mirrors. Best of all for me though was the choice of a very well kept pint of Beamish ( very hard to come by in these parts or indeed anywhere these days). Its a far superior stout to the overly marketed, overly hyped but cleverly advertised you know who. Would definitely try more food & Beamish here next time I'm here.

Had the Sunday dinner, the best part was the veg. Carrot and swede mash was lovely and was the broccoli. The meat, I opted for the turkey was quite fatty round the edges. The roast potatoes weren't cooked properly, very under cooked and looked pale. More like boiled potatoes than roasts and there was much gravy. I get sticking the Yorkshire pudding on top looks 'aesthetic' but there's not enough gravy to soak up the dryness. The staff were very friendly though. They are all happy and polite. That's why I've given 3 stars. If the staff wasn't so nice, they'd have 1 star. The atmosphere isn't great. Seems very quiet and dull. Won't be coming back and wouldn't recommend for food. But if your only nipping in for 1 drink, it's ok.
