About This Pub
Ah, McHughs in Belfast is one of those places that just hits the spot for a proper pub experience – you know, the kind where you wander in after a long day and feel instantly at ease. From what I've gathered from chats with others who've been, it's got this lovely, historic charm with wall paintings and a welcoming buzz that makes it stand out in the city centre. The food's a real highlight for many, with the Sunday roast getting high praise and that Guinness going down a treat, paired with top-notch service from the team behind the bar. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect; a few folks have mentioned the odd dish falling flat, like an overly salty lamb stew, and the prices do sting a bit for pints and mains. Still, if you're up for a lively spot that's worth the visit, it's a cracking choice – just pop in early or book ahead to dodge the crowds and make the most of it.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with loads of character from historical wall paintings and a cosy vibe that makes you feel right at home.
-
The food's generally spot on, like that cracking Sunday roast and a perfectly poured Guinness – it's a treat for anyone popping in for a meal.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and great service that adds to the overall experience.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, including a brilliant range of whiskies and Irish lagers that any enthusiast would appreciate.
Cons
-
The food can be a bit hit or miss; for instance, some dishes like the lamb stew might turn out too salty and not quite live up to the hype.
-
Prices are on the steeper side, with pints around £5-6 and mains at £17, which might feel a tad pricey for what's on offer.
-
It's often absolutely packed, so you'll need to make a reservation to avoid disappointment and ensure you get a spot.

A really charming Pub filled with character. I stumbled across it after getting off from the airport, and I enjoyed my first pint of Guinness of my trip. I also had some cracking food. I definitely recommend it!
Make sure you make a reservation, always full!
Caring service, good atmosphere.
But food was average and didnt live up to our expectations or its reputation.
Lamb stew was too salty.
Food was £17/main, pints £5-6 (little steep). Great food, great Guinness. No takeaways unfortunately.

Luckily, I was staying right next to the bar.
Was looking for a good Sunday lunch in Belfast and saw a review for McHughs and thought we would try it. We didn’t have a booking and they managed to fit us in. The Sunday beef roast was fantastic alongside the Guinness. Highly recommended and will visit again when back in the city
