About This Pub

Ah, McCafferty's – it's one of those places that really captures the essence of a good old Irish bar right here in Bicester, with its cosy nooks, lively events, and that unmistakable friendly buzz that draws you in. I love how they've nailed the traditional feel, complete with toe-tapping live music every weekend and a cracking beer garden where you can enjoy a game of darts or just soak up the sun with a cold one in hand. The drink selection is brilliant too, offering everything from smooth real ales to classic Guinness, and the staff often come across as welcoming and efficient, making for some memorable nights out. But, let's be honest, it's not all pints and cheers; there have been a few grumbles about security not stepping in quickly enough during minor scuffles, and some inconsistencies with house rules that can leave you scratching your head. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.2, it's clear that for many, the good times outweigh the bad, so if you're up for a bit of Irish craic with your mates, it's worth popping in – just keep an eye out for those busier evenings.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is spot on for a traditional Irish pub, with that warm, welcoming vibe that makes you feel right at home, especially with the live music and events keeping things lively.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, from fine real ales and Guinness to a wide range of wines and spirits, perfect for a good old catch-up with mates.
  • The staff are generally friendly and quick to serve, which really adds to the enjoyable experience, as mentioned in a few reviews.
  • There's a great beer garden with games like darts, ideal for a sunny afternoon or evening out, and it's all been nicely refurbished.
  • Live sports screenings and regular entertainment like bands and karaoke mean there's always something going on to keep the night buzzing.
Cons
  • Some folks have had issues with security not handling problems properly, like when someone spilled a drink and nothing much was done about it, which can put a damper on the fun.
  • There are reports of inconsistent rules, such as one person being asked to remove their cap while others weren't, which feels a bit unfair and frustrating.
  • Recent reviews show a mixed bag, with the average dipping to 2.5 out of 5, suggesting that the experience isn't always as top-notch as you'd hope.
  • It can get moderately busy at times, and while that's great for atmosphere, it might mean waits for drinks or seats if you're not there early.

Was nice to be in what felt like a traditional pub... Not many now in England however this one feels like the last one standing..Plenty of drinks to choose from and the bar staff are quick.

Came here on a night out with some friends, i’ve been before and had no problems except today. There was this woman, slightly tipsy but very much conscious. She first bumped into my friend and spilled her drink on purpose over her. I reported her to security who said they’d have a word but no action was taken. The lady continued to bump us all around taking turns, bearing in mind we were a group of seven and there was plenty of space not to be doing that. She would eye us up and down. I had enough and reported her to the security guard one more time to which he pulled her to the side. But she kept coming back into the pub, pushing, shoving and at one point swung round the back of my head !!! She did this as discreetly as she could, but I knew she did it on purpose. there was no security guard at this moment, even though the security guard said he would keep an eye on her. He was nowhere to be seen !!! I kept on confronting her, never got physical, and told this to the bar staff. All the security guard had to say to me was why didn’t you fight back? Is that the appropriate response? he said she wasn’t kicked out as she’s alone and vulnerable. What about the rest of us?? I’m never coming back here again because of this poor management. And I wouldn’t recommend anyone too, unless you want to risk your safety.

Nice enough bar on a major street, as the name suggests it's an Irish bar, so the drinks are as expected, Guinness and bottled red ale. All the usual wines and spirits are available. I frequented the pub on a Saturday lunchtime and it was moderately busy and seats were available. The drink prices were in keeping with the other pubs in this area. Set in an area with shops, cafes and other pubs with Bicester Village railway station an easy 12 minute walk away.

Popped in there for a drink with a friend and he was asked to remove his cap. After doing so he noticed there was another gentleman already by the bar wearing one, when simply pointing it out to the same member of staff (who seemed to be trying to act as some sort of manager) he was told ‘don’t tell me how to do my job’. To which he clarified he wasn’t, he was simply pointing out someone else appeared to be happily being served while wearing one. The member of staff then said it was her mate wearing the cap so he was allowed to wear it in ‘her’ pub and my friend needed to ‘sort his attitude out’. Felt extremely sorry for the poor other member of staff who looked visibly embarrassed by the behaviour on display. Would recommend trying to be more pleasant with visitors who aren’t her friends and if she removes the chip off her shoulder she may even make some new friends…
