About This Pub

Ah, Major Oak – it's one of those neighbourhood pubs that just feels like a proper gem in Arnold, Nottingham. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the staff really go the extra mile to make everyone feel welcome, whether you're there for a quick pint or a longer catch-up with mates. It's got that cosy, unpretentious charm, and being dog-friendly means you can bring your four-legged friend along for the fun. Plus, with things like a pool table and weekend entertainment, it's not just about the drinks – there's a bit of excitement to keep things lively, and it's nice to see it's affordable too. On the flip side, food seems to be a bit of a mixed bag; some love it, but others have had rough patches, like waiting ages for meals during events or finding portions a tad skimpy. If you're planning a big gathering, it might pay to double-check on that front to avoid any disappointments. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening out, but like any spot, it's got its quirks – worth a visit if you're in the area, just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff at Major Oak are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's a lovely spot for a casual pint with friends, with a relaxed atmosphere that's perfect for unwinding.
  • They're dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're popping in with your furry companion for a quick drink.
  • There's entertainment on offer, like a pool table and even a bouncy castle when the weather's nice, adding a fun twist to your visit.
  • Kids are welcome until 9 pm, so it's family-oriented if you're looking for a place to enjoy a drink without rushing off.
Cons
  • Food options can be a bit hit or miss – some folks say they don't serve any, while others had disappointing experiences with portions and service for larger groups.
  • Service might slow down during busier times, like events or parties, which could leave you waiting a bit longer than you'd like.
  • It seems like the pub doesn't have a website, so planning ahead or checking details online might be a faff.

Booked for in advance for a Christmas party of 30 people (31 turned up) The food came out one/two plates at a time, 15 kids sat waiting for nearly an hour to get fed. By the time the adult plates came out the portions were smaller than the kids without any trimmings, when we questioned what was going on they told us they had run out of food. Didn’t offer a refund and told us it was in fact our fault for 1 person extra turning up (laughable) three members of staff came and were rude to us, told us they are not a food pub (why take our money??) one shouted at one child in the group demanded they sit down ( baring in mind we had booked the whole back room as a private function) one poor lady on the bar actually tried to apologise but by then it was too late . 3 members of the group had fish pie that was not edible, they did get a refund because it was so bad!! The staff have blocked us on Facebook for leaving a review, which speaks for its self. Quick to take the money for food and drink (for well over 3hours due to terrible service) but not smart or kind or sensible enough to actually sort it out in person! Avoid. That pub put the BAR in BAR-humbug! No merry Christmas with them! Update: The pub has now contacted the main booking person for the Christmas lunch and asked them to stop us posting, because after the 4the person came out and we said how rude the other 3 had been they gave us x2 strong bow, small coke and an orange juice, they have told them we accepted 4 drinks for the poor experience of 31 people and that is the end of it. Had I of known I was excepting a gagging order I’d of passed!!!
