About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about Mad Squirrel Taproom in Watford – it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a good night out. Picture this: you're stepping into this vibrant bar just off the High Street, with its cool industrial chic decor, graffiti walls, and cosy nooks that make you feel right at home. The craft beers are the star of the show, all brewed locally in Hertfordshire, and there's always something fresh on tap to try, whether you're a die-hard fan or just dipping your toes in. Pair that with some seriously good food like stone-fired pizzas or juicy burgers, and you've got a winning combo that's not too heavy on the wallet. The team there are absolute gems, always up for a chat and happy to suggest a taster if you're undecided – it's those little touches that make the experience memorable. On the flip side, it does get mobbed during events or footie matches, so you might end up queuing for a drink or struggling for a seat, and they could do with a few more hands on deck when things heat up. Still, for a relaxed evening with mates, watching the game, or even bringing the family and the dog along, it's got that warm, inclusive feel that makes it stand out. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're in Watford and fancy a pint with a bit of buzz, but maybe plan ahead for busier times to avoid any hassles.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The craft beer selection is absolutely top-notch, with a fantastic range of local brews on tap and in cans – perfect for anyone wanting to try something new or stick to favourites.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, often going the extra mile like offering tasters to help you pick the right beer, making every visit feel welcoming.
  • Food options are a real highlight, with delicious artisan pizzas, burgers, wings, and more, all made with fresh ingredients and reasonably priced.
  • It's got a vibrant, industrial chic vibe with cosy spots inside and outside seating, plus it's family and dog-friendly, which makes it great for all sorts of get-togethers.
  • They host live music, events, sports screenings, and even quiz nights, adding to the lively atmosphere and giving you plenty of reasons to pop in regularly.
Cons
  • It can get really packed during big events or matches, which might make it a bit overwhelming if you're after a quiet pint.
  • Service can sometimes feel stretched thin when it's busy, with just a couple of folks behind the bar trying to keep up, leading to waits.
  • The beer selection is mostly their own brews, so if you're hoping for a wider variety of guest beers, you might find it a tad limited.

Watford has been crying out for a craft beer place for forever. This place is great for locally brewed craft beer. Staff are great. Food is great, but the main draw here is the beer. Only way this place could get better is if they had more guest beers.

Such a nice place to drink. Plenty of seats inside and outside but I visit it at the time when there was a match in Watford and it was full packed. Drinks are not bad. Mad Squirrel is brewing not bad variety. Been there for a drink and ending up with 4. One thing didn’t like is just 2 people serving behind the bar when there was a long queues. Situated in high street is not bad.

Huge selection of beers on tap, the manager is really friendly. As I haven’t got a clue about beer or what I wanted to choose he gives you a small taster before you buy it which helps. Pizzas are great. Meat Feast at £15 Nachos were about £9 Offered great service to someone in our group who requested gluten free pizza due to being coeliac. Putting the person at ease! Perfect service.
