About This Pub

You know, when you wander into Ma Boyle's, it's like stepping back in time with its roots going all the way to 1860—it's got this warm, authentic feel that's just charming. I love how they've nailed the food side of things; their Sunday roasts and traditional dishes like scouse are proper tasty and have people coming back for more, especially if you're after something hearty with a side of local ales or cocktails. The staff really make the place shine too, always chatting away and making sure you're looked after, which adds to that relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Plus, with events like the Monday quiz nights or Saturday jazz sessions, there's always a bit of buzz to keep things entertaining. On the other hand, it can get a wee bit snug inside when it's busy, so if you're not keen on a crowd, you might want to time your visit carefully. And while the food's generally brilliant, it's worth noting that it might not be perfect every day, as one chap found his roast a bit disappointing. All in all, it's a solid choice for a catch-up with mates in Liverpool—just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic charm of Ma Boyle's, dating back to 1860, really adds a lovely touch of authenticity and makes you feel like you're stepping into Liverpool's past.
  • Their food is spot on, with standout dishes like the Sunday roast and traditional scouse that have folks raving—perfect for a hearty meal after exploring the city.
  • The staff are absolute gems, always friendly and attentive, going the extra mile to make sure everything's just right for a relaxed visit.
  • It's in a brilliant spot near the Albert Dock and Pier Head, making it ideal for visitors or locals looking for a convenient spot to unwind with local ales and cocktails.
  • They've got a great lineup of events, like weekly pub quizzes and live jazz on Saturdays, which keep the atmosphere lively and fun for a night out.
Cons
  • The space can feel a bit cosy and compact, so it might get a tad crowded during busy times, which could make it less relaxing if you're after some peace and quiet.
  • Food quality seems to vary a little; while most rave about it, one person mentioned their Sunday roast wasn't quite up to scratch, so it might not hit the mark every time.
  • There's a service charge for larger groups or bottomless brunches, which could catch you off guard and add a bit to the bill when you're settling up.

The pub is in the quiet part of town, which I like. We had fish and chips and scouse dinner, both great! Definitely worth visiting while in Liverpool!

I looked it up for go-to restaurants for a Sunday roast then this one is among the top so went here for dinner. It's tucked away in a street near the St. Nicholas church. The place itself is compact with chill ambience. Staff were welcoming and attentive. The roast, however, was not the best. The potatoes were hard as a rock on the outside so I try to carve the inner part only and also the sauce was too salty. I've only tried one roast apart from this from different lowkey place and this was not better, nor the same at least. Perhaps it was only during that time we got unlucky but I may still return and give it another go one day.

We heard about rave reviews about Ma Boyle’s Sunday roast and they were on point. The roast beef and chicken were cooked to perfection. The flavours were well balanced. The drinks were reasonable too. Jessica, our food and beverage attendant, was friendly and knowledgeable making our first time here memorable. Thank you

If you thought Ma Boyle’s was a spit-and-sawdust kind of place, think again. This is a quality pub with excellent service and a welcoming atmosphere. The waitress went out of her way to help us, making sure everything was just right. The vibe is relaxed, and the clientele is a fascinating mix—from WAGs to musicians, all enjoying the great atmosphere. They also host jazz nights, which adds something a little different to the usual city centre pub experience. Plenty of tables available, plus a downstairs area if you want a more tucked-away spot. No parking (as expected in the city centre), but it’s well worth the visit. The food looked fantastic too.

We reserved a table but arrived early and they were able to give us a table. I wasn't sure on arrival whether I would like this place but thanks to the friendly service and great food along with a good atmosphere (it was pretty busy even at 5pm) my hesitation was unnecessary. This was our first taste the 'scouse' stew and it was delicious!
