Krakatoa Bar, 2 Trinity Quay, Aberdeen AB11 5AA

About This Pub

Ah, Krakatoa – what a gem of a spot in Aberdeen! I've got to say, chatting about it feels like sharing a pint with mates after a great evening. The place has this infectious energy with its tiki vibes and that imposing statue outside, drawing you into a world of volcanic-themed fun. From what I've seen in the reviews, folks absolutely rave about the decorating – it's gorgeous and immersive, paired with amazing music that ranges from grassroots gigs to karaoke on Wednesdays, which sounds like a blast. The drinks are a highlight too; think fiery cocktails, tasty ciders, and a solid beer selection that keeps the good times flowing. It's got that grassroots music venue feel, making it ideal for catching up-and-coming acts or just letting loose with friends. On the flip side, though, it's a smaller space, so it can get a tad crowded on busier nights, and if you're not into the whole tiki scene or prefer a quieter pub, it might not hit the spot. Still, with a solid 4.6 rating from heaps of reviews, it's clear this place does a lot right, and I'd reckon it's well worth a visit for anyone up for something a bit different in Aberdeen – just plan ahead for those event nights!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – think vibrant tiki decor and neon lights that make you feel like you've stepped into a tropical paradise right in the heart of Aberdeen.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, from mouth-watering tiki cocktails to a great range of beers, ciders, and even cask ales that keep things interesting.
  • The music scene is brilliant, with grassroots gigs, karaoke nights, and all sorts of events that create a lively, welcoming vibe – perfect for a fun night out.
  • It's got that authentic dive bar charm without losing its appeal, and the staff seem spot on based on what folks are saying, making it feel like a proper local haunt.
  • Prices are moderate, so you can enjoy a good time without breaking the bank, and they've got some cool merch like those volcano bowls if you fancy a souvenir.
Cons
  • It might feel a bit niche for some, as the tiki theme and dive bar style aren't everyone's cup of tea, so if you're after something more traditional, it could miss the mark.
  • The venue is on the smaller side, which means it can get quite packed during events, making it tricky to find space or have a quiet chat.
  • Opening from 2pm means it's not ideal for a lunchtime pint; you might have to plan your day around it if you're an early bird.
  • With all the focus on music and events, it could be a bit overwhelming if you're just looking for a relaxed drink without the buzz.

Every city has a, the place. This is Aberdeens, the place. Karaoke on Wednesdays does not disappoint. Have a cold beer or a hot tea. The lighting is meticulous and exuberant. Go on in. Get ya a drink they set on fire.

I love that place. That atmosphere. The only pub in Aberdeen that didn't lose its charm.🥰😍 They have so nice Rhubarb cider. Always drink there 2-3 pintes. So many ciders and beers on draft.

Invited by a musician friend playing that evening. Haven’t been to a music bar for a very long time (ok I’m old). Expected the worst. Experienced the best. It’s a small venue with a friendly vibe and a variety of interesting events coming up. See pics. We’ll be back.
