About This Pub
Ah, King Charles I, what a delightful little find in the heart of London! I've got to say, it's one of those pubs that just warms your cockles from the moment you step inside. The folks behind it have done a stellar job keeping it community-owned and true to its roots, especially in an area that's gentrifying faster than you can say 'pint please'. The real ales are top-notch, and at prices that won't leave you skint, it's ideal for sinking a few with friends while soaking up that welcoming, inclusive atmosphere – they're proudly LGBTQIA+ friendly, which makes it feel all the more special. Events like the quiz nights and live music add a bit of spontaneous fun, and the staff are just brilliant, always up for a laugh. On the flip side, it's a shame they don't do food in-house; you'll need to grab takeaways from nearby, which isn't the end of the world but can interrupt the flow. And while it's blissfully quiet compared to the corporate bars nearby, that might not suit if you're in the mood for a packed house. Overall, it's a cracking spot for a proper pub experience – I'd definitely recommend popping in for a drink and seeing what all the fuss is about, as long as you're up for that authentic, no-frills charm.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's a proper, award-winning London boozer with a fantastic selection of real ales, ciders, and wines at really reasonable prices – perfect for a cheeky pint without breaking the bank.
-
The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming, with a roaring fire, a cracking jukebox, and a community-owned vibe that's LGBTQIA+ friendly and full of character.
-
They've got a great lineup of events like live music, DJ nights, and that anarchic quiz – it's a hidden gem just off the hustle of King's Cross, making it feel like a proper local sanctuary.
-
The staff are absolute legends, always up for a chat and happy to help, plus it's community-run, which adds a lovely, inclusive touch.
Cons
-
They don't serve food on-site, so you'll have to order in from nearby spots, which can be a bit of a faff if you're peckish.
-
It might feel a tad quiet at times, especially if you're after a more lively, buzzing crowd – it's off the beaten track, which is charming but not for everyone.
-
In a rapidly changing area like King's Cross, there's always that worry it might not stay as authentic forever, though it's holding its own for now.

Great little award-winning pub just off the beaten track near King's Cross, so relatively quiet. Excellent range of ales. No food, but you can order in from other nearby establishments.
The bar has free postcards, and in a tipsy haze I wrote one to my friend, promising I'd end up dragging them here for some great cask bitters. Forgetting their address, I asked the kind bar staff if they'd hold on to it. Well they did more than that - they kept it hidden behind a bottle of Tia Maria for my return 2 months later. The staff on the day sounded confused at first, but found a note left by the bar owner. What a great full circle of events!
Just a stones throw from King's Cross Station, but a world away from the bland corporate bars near King's Cross.
Has well looked after cask beer, and is in the Good Beer Guide 2025.
Fantastic chilled atmosphere when I visited on Sunday... Well worth searching out!
A jewel in the centre of Kings Cross. Fantastic place. Fantastic staff. Great prices and a very cosy pub and a hidden gem in a city full of pubs with pints that cost more than £9
This pub was an absolutely amazing find – the best "London boozer" I've ever been to, and believe me, I've visited quite a few! It's steeped in history, with all its original features intact, and is a community-owned free house (really great prices, too). Simon behind the bar was an absolute legend – so passionate about the pub, its history, and its beers. We only intended to stop for one drink just as it opened but ended up catching a later train back to Newcastle after staying well into the afternoon and listening to tunes on the free jukebox. We'll definitely be back!
