About This Pub
Ah, the Hen & Chickens Bar & Grill – it's one of those places that really hits the mark for a good night out or a family dinner in West Bromwich. From what I've gathered from the buzz around, the food is where it shines brightest; think delicious curries and grills that stand up to the best in the area, all at prices that won't break the bank. It's got that warm, inviting feel with friendly staff who make you feel right at home, and the spacious setup means you can relax without feeling hemmed in. Plus, it's great for families or if you're keen on watching the match on the telly. But, let's be straight, it's not all roses – there's been a mention or two about hygiene not being up to scratch, which is a shame and something to keep in mind. Also, some regulars aren't too chuffed about the new owners ditching those nice little touches like free sides, and the beer options are a bit straightforward if you're after something more exciting. Still, with a solid 4.4 rating from heaps of folks, I'd say it's worth a punt if you're in the area, just go in with your eyes open and you'll likely have a top time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is absolutely spot on – plenty of rave reviews about the curries and grills being top-notch and reasonably priced, making it a winner for a hearty meal.
-
It's a family-friendly spot with a welcoming atmosphere, perfect for popping in with the kids or catching the footy on the screens while enjoying a drink.
-
The staff are really friendly and helpful, which adds to that cosy, community feel you'd expect from a local pub.
-
The place is nicely done out with a spacious restaurant area, so you won't feel cramped even if it's buzzing.
Cons
-
There have been some concerns about hygiene, like one chap mentioning dodgy standards, which is a bit off-putting if you're after a clean spot.
-
A few folks miss the little extras, such as free poppadoms that used to come with the meal, now that the new owners have changed things up.
-
The beer selection is pretty basic, so if you're a craft ale enthusiast, you might find it a tad underwhelming.

Well, let me just start warning everyone that the hygiene levels for this place are very questionable.
I went here with family, the place looked nice there were a few people in there and tbh I was looking forward to trying the food.
Everything seemed okay until it wasn’t,
Firstly… sneezing across the kitchen without covering your mouth is vile and yes we could see you (chef in the far back) sneezing without covering your mouth yuk !
Then we had the server WHO thought it was appropriate to get his grubby hands and place them IN MY FOOD THAT I ORDERED to pull out “somethin” and then proceeded to place said plate of food onto our table AFTER he finished rummaging in it.
When asked “what did you find in my plate?” He told me “nothing nothing” as he wiped whatever it was onto the server tray.
I told him i am not eating that after he put his hands all over it, he tried leaving the plate on the table i told him again i am not eating that.
Once he took the plate back to the kitchen , he sent it back to the chef (again we can see you in that kitchen), the chef was about to “reheat” said food that had an issues and clearly send it back like it was fresh.
I got up from the table and reported to who i guess was the manager.
I told him the situation and requested a refund as i nor the other guests could possibly be eating from there. The manager seemed reluctant to give us a refund which i understand because we only just had starters no mains came out but after again making my point that we wouldn’t feel comfortable eating in his establishment he gave us a refund.
All in all wouldn’t go again.
P.s
You really need to use a blow torch on those chicken lollipops there was feathers still on it.
This was our favourite desi pub bar none. But, simple changes by the new owners have altered my opinion. No free poppadoms salad and sauces. I know this has nothing to do with the quality of the food, but it was a nice touch. I did say to a member of staff that they could have factored this into the newly revised prices. The prawn starter was more like a plate of vegetables. I was the only one at the bar and 2 members of staff were talking in their own language and laughing. I felt uncomfortable. The price of the food and the whole experience was sadly lacking for me. The food was still of a good standard but on the whole we will not be returning. Sorry.
Credit where credit is due, I rarely write reviews but the food at the Hen and Chickens knocks its competitors out of the park. We’ve been to every curry house in the area, and one of our favourites is award winning restaurant in Stourbridge. The food here is on par and very reasonably priced considering. If you’re in the West Bromwich area, it’s worth a visit for taste!
Came here on Saturday evening as a party of 4 (2 adults and 2 children).
Really busy on arrival which is always a good sign!! 👍
We were seated in a booth and ordered our drinks at the bar. Football was on the screens which pleased my husband and eldest daughter!
We decided what we were having for food and ordered at the hatch.
Poppadoms bought out swiftly and they were fresh.
Mains followed not long after and all food was really good. We had:
Kids Nuggets and chips.
2 x chicken tikka wraps.
2 x chips.
Chicken curry.
Mushroom fried rice.
Great value for money.
Overall a nice bar and grill and I would recommend a visit!
The pub is nicely done out with a spacious restaurant area, which is where I spent my time, but I did wander into the pub area for a few seconds and it was fairly tidy in there too.
The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Prices are quite reasonable. Beer selection is pretty basic, but that's usually the case for the majority of these kinds of places.
The food, in my humble opinion, isn't top tier in comparison to other similar places, but still good enough to make the place a solid dining option. Nice touch giving out complimentary poppadoms while you wait on your order, and fairly good variety on the special mixed grill.
There are a couple of free car parks and a few street parking options nearby, which was quite convenient.
