About This Pub

Ah, the Hawk in Battlesbridge – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper Essex gem, you know? From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, it's got this inviting vibe with a beautiful garden that's perfect for nipping out for a pint or a bite when the weather's playing nice. The food's generally a winner; imagine tucking into tasty starters, hearty mains, and even a kids' menu that's spot on for family days out – and at prices that feel fair for the effort put in. The team there really shine, being so helpful and making sure everyone's looked after, which adds that extra warmth to your visit. But, let's keep it real, it's not all roses; a few have mentioned the odd dish not quite hitting the mark, like something being a bit dry or not as fresh as you'd hope, and it can sting the wallet if you're not careful. Overall, though, with its solid 4.4 rating, it's worth popping by for a good old pub sesh – just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a brilliant time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious pub grub like beef croquettes, king prawn linguine, and a cracking Sunday lunch, all made with fresh, local ingredients that really hit the spot.
  • The staff are top-notch; they're friendly, attentive, and go the extra mile, like being super accommodating for things like nut allergies, which makes you feel right at home.
  • It's a warm and welcoming spot with a lovely atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed meal or a catch-up with mates, and that outdoor garden is just ideal for soaking up the sun with a refreshing drink.
  • Great value for money, offering gourmet-style dishes at prices that won't break the bank, especially for families or groups looking for a proper country pub experience.
Cons
  • Some dishes can fall short on quality, like a dry sea bass or a pie that feels like it wasn't freshly made, which might leave you a bit disappointed.
  • It can feel a tad pricey for what you get at times, so if you're watching the pennies, you might think twice before ordering.
  • While most experiences are positive, there are occasional gripes about the food not quite living up to expectations, especially if you're after something truly homemade.

Had a really good Sunday lunch here yesterday. All of the staff from entrance to bar were great. Our waitress (Bev) was so attentive and helpful it made the experience fantastic. Food was great. Can definitely recommend the trio of desserts. Will be coming back is this level of service and food is always the same.

We were a family of six meeting up for a get together and a birthday . Service from staff was excellent without being overbearing . Our general feeling was that food quality was poor and the cost for it was extortionate . Food gave impression that it’s not made on premises. Sea bass very dry. A pie half eaten as not much meat and left half of pastry as hard. Gammon steak looked like egg on toast as the gammon was cooked to very dark colour. No big drink order and came to nearly £300! Not somewhere to return in the area unfortunately .

Got a seat in bar area for dining, but nonetheless, it is a lovely place. The food was fantastic, so tasty, hot and attention to detail is fab. The beef croquettes, breads were delicious, the crab and king prawn linguine was to die for. The service and friendly staff added to the lovely atmosphere. I would definitely recommend booking in advance tho as it is very popular.

Excellent venue for a decent hot meal. Great choice of food. Beautiful looking venue. Nice, warm and welcoming. Easily accessible seating. Gourmet food and choice of beer was excellent. Our choices - Steak and Malbec pie and the King Prawn linguine - were amazing! Tremendous, very accommodating service. Prices reasonable for what you are getting. Highly recommended.

Had the most lovely dinner here this evening, the most friendly staff I don’t think I’ve ever had better service. The food was artisan but for such an affordable price. We want to say thank you Stacey for being extremely accommodating to a nut allergy on our table. 10/10!
