About This Pub
You know, when I think about the Harvester Ancient Briton in St Albans, it just warms my heart how it's become such a go-to for a relaxed meal with loved ones. The food is spot on; that rotisserie chicken is juicy and full of flavour, paired with an unlimited salad bar that's fresh as can be – it's the kind of thing that leaves you satisfied without breaking the bank. The staff really shine too; they're attentive and make you feel right at home, like chatting with old mates while you're tucking in. It's brilliantly family-oriented, with options for even the fussiest eaters, and the location's a bonus, right near some lovely spots for a wander afterwards. On the flip side, it's a chain, so it doesn't have that quirky, one-of-a-kind charm some pubs offer, and it can get a bit hectic when it's busy, which might not suit if you're after a quiet pint. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for a good-value meal – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but keep in mind it shines brightest for casual family days out rather than something more intimate.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely brilliant – especially that rotisserie chicken and the fresh, unlimited salad bar; it's a real treat for a hearty meal.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive; folks like Kelly, Lily, and Beth really make you feel welcome and looked after.
-
It's a top spot for families, with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for kids, making it easy to enjoy quality time together.
-
Great value for money with deals like the £8 chicken, and it's conveniently located near attractions like St Albans Cathedral for a quick bite after exploring.
-
The place is spotlessly clean and has a nice, relaxed vibe, perfect for casual get-togethers over breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Cons
-
As a chain restaurant, it might not have that unique, cosy local pub feel some folks crave; it's more about reliable family dining than a hidden gem.
-
It can get quite busy, especially on weekends or near popular spots, which might mean a bit of a wait for a table or that lively atmosphere turning a tad noisy.
-
The menu focuses heavily on pub classics, so if you're after something more adventurous or fine dining, it might not quite hit the mark.
-
While recent reviews are glowing, I've heard there can be mixed experiences overall, so it's worth checking on the day for consistency.

We had a great visit to Harvester! The short rib of the lunch menu exceeded our expectations. It was absolutely delicious. Kelly, our server, provided excellent service. She was extremely professional, attentive, and kind throughout our meal. The restaurant itself was spotless, and the salad bar was fresh and well-stocked. Overall, we really enjoyed our time here and will definitely be coming back!
Before visiting this restaurant I read the review and there was some bad and some good but I thought I would give it a go myself. Going here was a delightful experience and I really enjoyed myself, the food was lovely and the staff were kind. Our waitress Lily was bubbly and greeted us well, she was consistent with her service and was a good host. We will definitely be eating here again! I definitely recommend for a calm meal with family and friends. It was a delightful experience.
Beth was a wonderful addition to our evening - my partner and I came for the £8 chicken deal and Beth was super pleasant and helpful. Great food and value. Would recommend! Thanks to Beth and the lovely ladies all running the floor this eve :) x
