About This Pub

Ah, the Jolly Sailor in St Albans is one of those pubs that just draws you in with its vibrant energy and that genuine community spirit – it's like walking into a hub where everyone's up for a good time. You'll find plenty to love, from the buzzing events like quizzes, poker, and those legendary karaoke sessions on weekends that get the whole place singing along, to a solid selection of beers that pair brilliantly with their comforting pub grub. It's especially ace for sports fans, with big screens to catch the games. But, let's be straight, it's not all smooth sailing; there've been a few grumbles about service slipping up, like when orders go awry or issues aren't dealt with quickly, and that could leave a sour taste. Still, with so many folks giving it high marks overall, it's worth popping in for the positives – just go in with your eyes open and you'll likely have a top night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely buzzing – it's a proper welcoming spot with a real community feel, perfect for catching up with mates over a pint.
  • They've got a cracking lineup of events like quizzes, poker nights, and karaoke on Fridays and Saturdays, which really gets everyone involved and having a laugh.
  • The beer selection is spot on, with an impressive range of draught options, especially if you're into your sports while sipping one.
  • The pub food is hearty and comforting, going down a treat with the drinks – it's just what you'd hope for from a traditional local haunt.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit hit or miss at times, with some reports of orders getting muddled and staff not handling things as professionally as they could.
  • There have been a few dodgy incidents, like security not stepping up during busy nights, which might put a dampener on things for some.
  • Not every drink is a winner; for instance, the Guinness might just be average on occasion, so it doesn't always live up to expectations.

I went to enjoy a karoke night with my friends. There were 2 men harassing our group and when I reported this to the security guard, I was outraged after he said he could not do anything about it since he was the landlords son! How foolish and unprofessional... The harassment continued throughout the night and in the end we left early incase a fight brewed. This was particularly very unkind from all staff who saw what was going on but failed to do anything, absolutely awful. What a way to spoil a night that was supposed to be a celebration of my friends birthday. I will report to the police.

Older style typical pub for a Wednesday night to watch a big “Derby”game small ish crowd in mostly eating and the food look ok. Guinness was just ok, service was quick and friendly, would go again.

The female serving messed up the order and, instead of apologising, argued and behaved disgracefully. I had invited friends to sample the pub with the hope of gaining it extra custom for the excellent Sunday roast. After this, they won't be back. 17.4.24

Quite a locals pub but very welcoming with a friendly atmosphere and great pub food. Good selection of Brewpoint (Wells) beers.

This Charles Wells pub is tucked away from St Albans’ centre at Stonecross; the junction of Sandridge Road and Harpenden Road. It underwent a major refurbishment in 2008, which shaped the current internal layout - a large, busy public bar, a quieter saloon and a heated outdoor smoking area. The 'Jolly', as it is known, is a proper community pub. It hosts a golf society and pool & darts teams. Also quiz and karaoke nights! Traditional pub food and bar snacks compliment a good range of well-kept ales. Personally I prefer The Mermaid but I can see why this pub is a popular choice.
