About This Pub

So, picture this: you're popping into the Blacksmiths Arms in St Albans for a bite and a bevvy, and honestly, it's got that warm, inviting feel that makes you want to settle in. The food stands out as a real winner – think hearty, well-made dishes with plenty on your plate – paired with a fantastic array of drinks that cater to all tastes, whether you're after a craft beer or a fancy cocktail. The atmosphere buzzes, especially during live sport or in their lovely beer garden on a sunny day, and the staff often go the extra mile, like during those fun bottomless brunches where everything flows smoothly. On the other hand, it's not all smooth sailing; I've heard tales of strict rules that might see you hurried out the door a bit too soon if you've got the little ones with you, and there can be moments when service hits a snag, like bar issues slowing things down. Still, with its solid reputation, it's a place I'd recommend giving a go – just keep those quirks in mind for a more enjoyable visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – generous portions and high quality that really hit the spot.
  • A cracking selection of drinks, from craft beers to tasty cocktails, perfect for a relaxed evening.
  • The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, especially when there's live sport on the screens.
  • Plenty of outside seating in the beer garden, ideal for soaking up the sun with a pint.
  • Staff are generally friendly and attentive, making events like bottomless brunch a real treat.
Cons
  • Some policies can be a bit rigid, like not allowing tabs for larger groups, which might put a dampener on things.
  • Occasionally, you might get nudged out early if you've got kids in tow, which feels a tad unwelcoming.
  • There can be the odd service slip-up, such as bar staff struggling with equipment, leading to delays.
  • It doesn't always spring to mind as the go-to spot, so it might not be everyone's first choice for a night out.

Would not let me run a tab for a table of eight. Why? Told we had to leave by 8 o’clock as we had a child with us. Then security went straight to my granddad at 7:45 and told her to leave. We pointed out the time and he said she had to go now. His partner then came over and apologised and said we could stay until 9:00. We decided to leave. Menu was good but three of the dishes we asked for were not available. This on a Friday evening at 6:45? Not good

Have just attended a 12 person bottomless brunch, the service and drinks was absolutely brilliant. Our server Beth could not have been more attentive, very helpful and insured our glasses were always full! Would highly recommend and will definitely be back

Have to be honest, it's been quite a number of years since we've been in this pub. It's just not one we think of going into. So decided to have a pint and see what it was like. It was a Thursday afternoon, hardly anyone else in the pub. Staff were friendly, but the barman was having trouble with the beer pumps. Took our drinks out to the garden as it was a lovely afternoon. The garden is very nice. Lots of seating and some nice looking private huts/cabins (shed?), each looked to seat about six with their own TV and heater. Enjoy sitting there in the sun in the nice garden.

One of the best brunches we've had. Drinks kept on flowing and plenty of variety to choose from. The food was very good, made to a high standard and with generous portions. Will definitely be going back, SOON. Highly recommended if you like a busy pub atmosphere, plenty to drink with good food, this is the place. 👌🏾
