About This Pub

You know, chatting about the Hare & Hounds feels like recommending a cosy spot down the road – it's got that genuine village pub charm that's hard to beat. I love how welcoming it is to dogs; it's ideal if you've been out for a stroll around the nearby reservoirs and fancy a break. The food really stands out with its mix of German and English options, like those fabulous fish fries or a proper Sunday roast, and it's all made fresh, which adds to the appeal. Plus, with affordable prices and fun activities like darts or catching the footy on BT Sports, it's a great place to unwind with friends. On the downside, the dog-friendly setup can mean a bit of a whiff if it's been raining, and I've heard from a couple of folks that the meals aren't always spot-on, especially since the ownership changed, so you might get a mixed experience there. Still, with such a strong overall rating, it's definitely worth popping in for a pint and seeing for yourself – just keep an eye on those busy evenings!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's wonderfully dog-friendly, making it a perfect spot after a countryside walk with your four-legged mate.
  • The food is a delightful blend of German and English dishes, all freshly prepared and served with a smile – especially those Sunday roasts!
  • Prices are really affordable, so you can enjoy a hearty meal and a pint without breaking the bank.
  • The atmosphere is welcoming and lively, with entertainment like darts, pool, and BT Sports to keep things fun.
  • They've got great events such as Fish Fry Day and Open Mic Nights, plus a high food hygiene rating that gives you peace of mind.
Cons
  • It can sometimes smell of wet dogs, which might put off those who aren't keen on that.
  • A few visitors have noted that the food quality can vary, particularly after changes in ownership, leading to the odd disappointing meal.
  • During busy times, you might have to wait a bit for your food, so patience is key if it's packed.

Called today after my wife found it on a website. We ordered food and a pot of tea from the very pleasant lady behind the bar. I had a baked potato with cheese and salad and my wife had a halloumi wrap. Excellent service as was the food, served with a smile. Although we live over 20 miles away we shall certainly be visiting again as both the quality of food and the pleasant and efficient service were both impeccable. What made the visit even better was the fact that the two meals and cups of tea cost just over £21 for the lot. Very good value. Convivial atmosphere in beautiful country surroundings. Added to our 'Must come again' list and right at the top.

What a brilliant offer! We have been before for light bites and beers but tonight we tried the ‘chippy take out’ for £7….. it’s better value than a chip shop!! Beautifully battered fish that falls apart and fabulous home cooked chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce…. Honestly fantastic! Great value and the beer was great while we were waiting to pick it up 😋😋🤨

This pub was a favourite of ours before the ownership change and we did once try the German cuisine many years ago and found it to be excellent. We decided to eat there again but was very disappointed with the meal. The pub is dog friendly, so unfortunately smells of wet dog. The service is friendly and the lager shandy was very nice. £10.15 for two pints of lager shandy and a pint of coke, then a bit of loose change from £40 for three meals. I was fine with the price, expecting the portions to be a good size, however I couldn't believe it when they arrived. It barely counted as a snack. The food did taste good, what little we had. We will not be dining in the Hare & Hounds again, but good for a quick pit stop as the drinks are nice. Photos attached, so can make up own mind. Maybe a more fitting name would be The Soggy Dog.
