About This Pub
Ah, the Hare & Hounds in Braintree – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, you know? From the reviews I've had a look at, folks are raving about the food; think generous portions of roasts and desserts that hit the spot without breaking the bank. The service stands out too – the team are dead friendly and make you feel right at home, even squeezing you in on a busy day. It's got that classic country vibe with nice views, making it perfect for a casual catch-up or something a bit more special like a family do. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; the place is on the small side, so it might get a bit tight if it's packed, and not having prices on the menu could leave you scratching your head if you're not prepared. Still, with a solid 4.1 rating from the crowd, it's worth popping in for a pint and a bite – just keep those little niggles in mind for a smoother visit.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely delicious with generous portions, like those hearty roasts that leave you feeling well satisfied.
-
Service is spot on – the staff are friendly and really accommodating, even if you turn up without a booking.
-
It has a lovely, cosy atmosphere with a beautiful country feel and some pretty views that make it a great spot for a relaxed meal or even a special event.
-
They handle groups well, making it ideal for gatherings like family wakes, where the team goes above and beyond to make things smooth.
Cons
-
The space is a bit intimate and limited, which means it can feel quite snug or even crowded when it's busy.
-
There's no menu with prices on site, so if you're new, you might need to check socials beforehand to avoid any surprises.
-
Operating hours seem a tad inconsistent, and it's closed one day a week, which could throw a spanner in the works if you're planning a visit.

We visited for the first time today after reading good reviews. They squeezed us in without a booking and we got a table. The service was great and the food was delicious. We didn't stay too long because we knew they had bookings to honour. The setting is intimate and quite limited, despite being a large looking building from the outside. I'd definitely visit again maybe midweek as the vibe inside was a little odd today. Almost as though we had entered a private function. Cannot fault the staff though, very friendly.
Great meal, service and atmosphere. Roast was generous with portions and good quality. Desserts spot on too and good value. Old school ordering with no menu, but I did know the prices roughly beforehand by looking on the socials so no issue for us. For anyone new coming in, a menu with prices might be helpful.
Was meeting a friend for Sunday lunch and had the pleasure of choosing the Hare and Hounds to attend.
The place is under new management and what pleasant management that is. From entry very friendly staff getting drinks and throughout the meal. There is a large dining area indoors and a very large area outside. We had the Sunday roast and it was plentiful and delicious. Can highly recommend this place.
Our family booked this place to have a family wake, and I have to say the staff were wonderful and really made the afternoon perfect. The pub has a beautiful country look about it and has some very pretty views. The food spread that was laid on was very nice, and there was lots of variety.
My daughter was the only child present (2 years of age) and the staff were fantastic with her, letting her play with balloons and making her a non alcoholic cocktail, even put on the TV for her when she was getting tired. Would definitely recommend it.
We stopped by this lovely little pub on the off chance after my Uncle’s funeral at the Three Counties Crematorium up the road. We hadn’t booked anything as it was a sort of unofficial wake, but there were quite a few of us. As soon as we arrived we were taken care of. We were seen to a quiet area of the pub by a very friendly barmaid. She took our drinks order and returned regularly to check on us. We were also greeted by the landlord who was friendly and welcoming. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us and I am so very grateful. The food was lovely (we had some delicious pizzas) and the atmosphere was wonderful. It made a difficult day much, much brighter. Thank you.
