About This Pub
You know, when I think about The Retreat in Bocking, it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem – tucked away in the Essex countryside with all the charm of an old building. From the reviews, folks are raving about the welcoming atmosphere; it's that kind of place where you can pop in for a pint of cask ale and end up chatting away the evening. The food really stands out too – think hearty Sunday roasts with massive portions that leave you satisfied, and it's all at an affordable price. They've got live music and quiz nights on offer, which adds a nice buzz without overwhelming the cosy feel, and it's spot on for families looking for a relaxed outing. On the flip side, it's a bit of a shame if you're after vegetarian dishes, as you might need to give them a heads-up to avoid disappointment. Overall, it's got that excellent 4.7 rating for a reason, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep an eye on the opening times to make sure you're not caught out.

Great atmosphere friendly locals
Nice food and drink
Family friendly
A lovely atmosphere. Let them know in advance if you want a vegetarian roast if going for Sunday lunch. We didn’t and so it was not available but they were very accommodating and so I would still highly recommend.
Amazing food. Lovely staff. Great atmosphere. 100/10.
A beautiful oldie worldie, nicely maintained little pub. All the charm and warmth of home with service to match. Food 10, portions 11/10. It's the best experience in a pub I've ever had. We went on a Wednesday which of course is nice and quiet. The few local customers in there were pleasant and friendly. All in all, you cannot go wrong.
Here for a Sunday roast with family. Very reasonably priced. Food was lovely and hot. Very tender roast beef and a generous serving despite that being the 'small' size.
The Retreat is a very old building that winds itself around the incline it is set on. Staff were very friendly. We will return.
