About This Pub
You know, when I think about The Bell in Braintree, it just brings a smile to my face – it's one of those pubs that feels like a proper local haunt, especially with the new owners stepping in and making everything so welcoming. They're incredibly accommodating, always up for a chat, and they've got this great lineup of events like 80s discos and quizzes that really get the crowd going and foster that community spirit. The bar's well-stocked, and the whole place is kept impeccably clean, which is something you don't always find but makes a big difference when you're relaxing with a drink. On the flip side, the hours are a tad restricted, usually kicking off around tea time and wrapping up fairly early, and it's shut one day a week, so you might have to plan around that. Plus, if you're fancying a bite to eat, it's not clear what's on offer, so it might not be the spot for a full meal out. All in all, though, it's a solid choice for a relaxed night out – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, as the positives far outweigh the little niggles, and it's got that genuine, homely charm that'll have you coming back for more.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The new owners are absolutely brilliant – they're super accommodating and create a really warm, welcoming vibe that makes you feel right at home.
-
It's got a fantastic community feel with loads of great events like 80s nights, live music, quizzes, and bingo, which keep things lively and fun.
-
The place is spotlessly clean, from the bar area right down to the toilets, which is always a plus when you're settling in for a pint.
-
They've got a well-stocked bar with a good selection of drinks, and there's a function room that holds up to 120 people, perfect for hiring out for parties or gatherings.
-
As a family-run spot, it really serves the local community well, with that personal touch that makes every visit feel special.
Cons
-
The opening hours are a bit on the limited side, typically from around 4 PM to 10 PM, and it's closed one day a week, which might not suit everyone.
-
There's not much info on food options, so if you're after a proper meal with your drink, you might need to look elsewhere.
-
Being unclaimed online means updates and info might not be as spot-on or responsive as you'd hope, which could lead to the odd surprise.

I go all over the country because my job and this is hands down the best pub I’ve been to, very very accommodating and lovely owners. 10/10 would come back everyday of the week. At the time of visiting the new owners have only been in 2 weeks , FairPlay wow! Thank you so much for having me!
New management have taken over. Lisa and Craig have smashed it, only two weeks in, great community pub and so well stocked, you won't be disappointed xxx

This place was taken over the other week (14th May 2025), and I pop in the following Friday and wow, just wow. The place looked and smelled clean. The toilet was all nice and clean (the gents), so the women's must have been. I most all the seat was fixed in the booth. The beer all tastes nice and fresh I recommend the Stella, lovely pint 👌. I can't wait to see what upcoming events they have planned. Watch this space and hope to see you down there.

What a great local, lovely atmosphere, always feel welcome. Lots of great nights we have had down here. Some brilliant events aswell. 80's night, live music, quiz nights, bingo, fundraising event. Jacqui and Gary are brilliant nothing is ever to much trouble 🙂
Another great night at the 80s disco down The Bell, lots of dancing, laughter and a great atmosphere. We are always welcomed by Jacqui and Gary the landlords and can't wait for their next event. Would definitely recommend for a good night out.
