About This Pub

Ah, the Hand & Heart – what a spot! I've got to say, chatting about this place feels like recommending a favourite local haunt to mates over a pint. It's got that warm, welcoming feel right from the off, tucked away just a stone's throw from Nottingham city centre, with its famous cave area adding a touch of magic that sets it apart from your average boozer. The Sunday lunches are the talk of the town, based on what folks are saying – think succulent roasts that hit the spot every time, paired with top-notch service that makes you feel looked after without any fuss. And the drinks? Well, they're spot on too, with a great lineup of local cask ales and craft beers that beer enthusiasts will love, plus options for wine or coffee if you're not in the mood for the usual. It's clear from the buzz that people are really chuffed with the atmosphere and the little extras, like being dog-friendly in the bar. On the flip side, though, it does get heaving at peak times, so booking ahead is a must to snag a table, and if you've got a dog in tow, you might miss out on the cave experience, which is a bit of a shame. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening or a family meal, but go in with realistic expectations, and you'll have a cracking time – honest, it's all about that balance of charm and practicality!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The unique cave setting is absolutely magical – it's like stepping into a hidden gem, perfect for a cosy chat over drinks.
  • Sunday roasts are an absolute winner; from what I've heard, they're hearty, flavoursome, and a real treat, especially with the friendly service that makes you feel right at home.
  • They've got a brilliant selection of cask ales, craft beers, and even local wines, plus a decent coffee option if you're after something warmer.
  • It's super dog-friendly in the bar area, which is great if you're popping in with your furry friend for a pint.
  • Handy location near Nottingham city centre and the Playhouse theatre, making it ideal for pre-show drinks or a relaxed wander around.
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy, especially on Sundays, so you'll want to book ahead to avoid disappointment – no one likes turning up and finding no space.
  • Dogs aren't allowed in the cave section, which might limit things if you're with your pet and fancy that atmospheric spot.
  • The operating hours seem a bit varied, with it closed one day a week, so it's worth checking in advance if you're planning a midweek visit.

We’ve been coming to Hand & Heart for years, so when we heard it was under new management, we were a little nervous, especially since the Sunday roast has always been a favourite. But I’m beyond grateful (and relieved!) to say it’s still absolutely exceptional…if not even better! I had the Pork Roast, which was cooked to perfection, while the rest of my family opted for the Beetroot Wellington, and everything was divine. You must try the cauliflower cheese and piggies in blankets, one of each is plenty for two people, and they’re both absolutely delicious. The quality and attention to detail in the food are outstanding. The service was just as impressive, the staff were incredibly attentive, and I was genuinely surprised to see there was no service charge. Even when we tried to tip, the manager wouldn’t accept it! The pub still has the same cozy charm, and the cave setting remains as beautiful as ever. It was also fantastic value for money. There were six of us, we each had a roast, a drink or two, and the total came to under £180, a rarity for a meal of this standard. We went for Mother’s Day as a treat for my mum and auntie, and it was such a special experience. I honestly can’t recommend Hand & Heart enough, if you’re after a top-quality roast in a stunning setting with outstanding service, this is the place to go!

Went here for a really good Sunday roast for Mother’s Day. Food was superb and service excellent - they really looked after us and our 5 year old son. Setting in the cave with fairy lights is really unique and well worth a visit.

Lovely pub for food or drinks with friendly service. Had the Sunday roast and was one of the best we have had. 2 had the pork belly and 2 had the beef and both were fab. Love the cosy cave setting too to dine in. Will be back!

Me and my sister came here for dinner! As soon as we got in the staff was lovely! I didn't get her name but there was a very nice lady wearing red with brown hair that was a star! As for the food, it came out quickly and was beautiful. I first got the soup with the bread! The bread was fluffy and yummy! And the soup was flavorful and a good portion! My sister got the brie cheese wedge and it was full of cheese!! Then I got the pork belly and it was amazing! The pork was succulent and full of flavour! The sauce it came with was delicious and the veg was cooked perfectly! My sister got the burger and it was juicy and full of flavour! The chunky chips were to die for! And the atmosphere was so unique! How often do you get to have dinner in a cave!! Lovely dinner location!!

Had Sunday lunch for the first time with the original chef back and the new manager. Truly excellent, as good as it used to be. Service and staff were excellent. Fantastic food and drink, with real attention to the real ale. A tap takeover from the Bang the Elephant brewery with some excellent beers. It's good to see a welcome return to form on all fronts. Very much worth the walk up Derby Road.
