The Grand Central - Alt Bar & Live Music Venue, 80 Oxford St, Manchester M1 5NH

About This Pub

Ah, Grand Central – it's one of those Manchester gems that's been around the block and still holds its own with a solid 4.4 rating from heaps of reviews. I reckon it's a top choice if you're after a night of live tunes and a buzzing atmosphere, especially since it's tucked away on Oxford Street and stays open late into the wee hours. The staff often get a big thumbs up for being approachable and kind, and the prices on spirits and beers are pretty fair, making it easy to enjoy without worrying about the tab. But, let's be straight, it's not all roses – some mates have moaned about flat pints that need swapping, and there've been a few dodgy moments with conflicts or past management issues that could spoil the fun. Overall, if you're up for a bit of live music and good craic, it's worth a punt, just keep an eye out and maybe check the vibe on the night you go. It's got that warm, lived-in feel that makes you want to come back, warts and all.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The live music scene is absolutely buzzing – it's a fantastic spot for catching great bands and enjoying a lively atmosphere, especially on Oxford Street in Manchester.
  • Staff are generally super friendly and welcoming, with some cracking personalities behind the bar that make you feel right at home.
  • Drinks are reasonably priced for what's on offer, making it a wallet-friendly choice for a night out without breaking the bank.
  • It's got that classic pub vibe with a long history, and many folks have been regulars for years, which speaks volumes about its charm.
Cons
  • There have been issues with drink quality, like flat pints cropping up now and then, which can really put a dampener on the evening.
  • Occasional rough patches with management or interactions, as some have had unsettling experiences that left them feeling uneasy.
  • The music selection on the jukebox might not hit the mark for everyone, missing out on certain genres that could make the vibe even better.

Review update- Its safe to Return! I’ve been coming here for over 16 years, and honestly, this place has always been a gem, until last year’s reign of terror courtesy of Harry the horror manager. But good news Harry’s been sent packing off to Blackpool (lucky them), and things are back to the way they should be. If you remember the weird vibes from last year, don’t worr, it was a short, bad episode. Now the staff are relaxed, the atmosphere is friendly again, and it actually feels safe to come back and have a good time without drama. So consider this your official “it’s safe to return” memo. The place is back on track, and I’m happy to be hanging out here again like old times.

Cracking guy behind the bar, lovely personality and super kind. Place isn’t half bad, I definitely should have came here sooner. Spirts very decent price for today’s standards. I know it’s nothing on you guys but come on, no cattle decap, SOI or mainly deathcore on the jukebox haha I need some of that.

PLEASE fix the gas on your lines - last few times I've been I've had to ask for flat pints to be repoured after staff have been to the cellar and they've still come up flat. Been again tonight and asked for a visibly flat pint to be swapped for something else and that was flat too. Please sort this as Grand Central is my favourite drinking spot :(

I had a bad experience here a few weeks ago. I was trying to say 'excuse me please' to someone and trying to get her attention so that I could get to my friend to talk to him. Then, presumably her husband, came up to me and shoved me around and accused me of picking on his wife. I tried to explain that I was just trying to get past her, but he was having none of it. So I walked away out of the pub. My friend said that he spoke to the bouncers about it, and they said 'oh if he does it again we'll kick him out'. So this man was left to presumably start more fights with anyone who even looked at his wife. The toilets were also disgusting. I'm going to blame this on the clients because it's their fault really. I would not recommend going to this pub, primarily because of the clients it attracts but also because of the poor safety measures.

Great little venue on Manchester iconic Oxford Road. Went there for a Leaf Promotions live night and saw three amazing bands and all for free. Can't wait dorthe next visit as staff and environment were brilliant.
