The Kings Arms Pub, 3 King's Staith, York YO1 9SN

About This Pub

Ah, the Kings Arms – it's one of those timeless pubs in York that you can't help but appreciate for its straightforward charm. From what I've gathered from folks who've been there, the beers are an absolute highlight; the locally brewed ones and Sam Smith's range are spot on and won't break the bank, making it a go-to for anyone wanting a proper pint without spending a fortune. That riverside location is just brilliant too – imagine kicking back with friends, soaking up the views and the fresh air on a warm evening. The service can be really welcoming when it's at its best, adding to that cosy, community feel. But, on the flip side, there's that quirky no-phones policy, which might feel a tad outdated and could put a damper on things if you're not in the mood for it. Then there's the outdoor seating, which has caused a bit of confusion for some, with tales of being asked to shift spots unexpectedly. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're after an authentic pub experience with great value, but it's worth going in with realistic expectations – it's not about fancy frills, more about enjoying the simple pleasures with a side of history.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beers are top-notch and incredibly affordable, especially the Sam Smith's options – perfect for a budget-friendly night out.
  • It's got a brilliant riverside location, making it ideal for enjoying a pint outside with mates on a sunny day.
  • Service is generally spot on when it's good, with friendly staff who make you feel welcome, and it's a fantastic spot for group gatherings.
Cons
  • The no mobile phones rule while drinking can feel a bit restrictive if you're in the habit of checking your phone.
  • Outdoor seating areas can get confusing, leading to the odd mix-up or request to move, which might spoil the vibe.
  • The bar has a rather plain, no-frills feel to it, so if you're after something more polished or atmospheric, it might not hit the mark.

Best in the York.! Been there for a couple of times. The locally brewed beer was point on and great taste. Service was excellent but it depends on who was there. No mobile phones were allowed to use while drinking. U can sit outside next to the river. Fantastic place for group drinking.

Sat outside with drinks, granted from another pub but we didn’t realise that the seating was separated per pub as everything just blends in along the riverside front on the outdoor seating. The glass collector asked us to move and we said politely we would all go purchase drinks to remain sat on one of their benches, to which we were told he didn’t want us to do that and wanted us to move. He then went onto another table to ask them to move as they didn’t have Sam smiths glasses, he man handled a female customer which ended up in an altercation with various customers outside, he was smashing their drinks all over the floor just because they didn’t move the second he told them to and became very hostile & violent towards customers. Had the bartender of had the correct attitude & a polite attitude then I’m sure the situation would’ve been completely different but he caused a violent situation which did not even need to take place. Will not be returning to this pub due to the shocking customer service and approach from staff. Absolutely no need to treat people the way the staff do here.

The Kings Arms is a sam smiths pub, so there is the usual range of Sam Smith's beers. The Old Brewery bitter is not on hand pumps due to the cellar being above the bar. The beers and lagers are very good, and Sam Smiths is some of the cheapest beer in York. The bar is very spartan due due to regular flooding. There is a board on the wall showing how high the water gets. Like all Sam Smith's pubs, mobile phones, laptops, and dogs are banned. There is no music TVs or bar games.

Maybe our favourite place to eat and stay. Coukd not fault anything staff even though young were amazing and attentive. Food was hot, well cooked and tasty. Room was clean and had everything you could want including a complimentary scone with jam and cream on arrival. Oh forgot to mention they have their own brewery on site, heaven.

This pub was highly recommended from a local that we met and has some really good history to it and was well located on the river front. We were told it was cash only but when we got there, they now do accept credit cards. You can take your drinks and sit outside in the designated area, but will be given plastic glasses due to safety ordinances. This is a Samuel Smith pub so all the taps and the full range of their ales. Really nice to see them all available. Great for people watching as well.
