About This Pub

Ah, the George & Dragon – it's one of those pubs that really grows on you once you step inside. From what I've gathered chatting about places like this, the food is a highlight; they've got these new lunch deals that are an absolute bargain, with mains kicking off at just £5, and options like the Grilled Chicken Caesar Flatbread sound like they'd hit the spot on a lazy afternoon. Plus, starting your day with their breakfast is a treat, available from as early as 6:30am on weekdays. And if you're into your sports, it's brilliant for that – they show live Premier League action and more on TNT Sports, so you can cheer on your team with a pint in hand. The staff can be stars too; stories of them going the extra mile, like serving a whole group flawlessly or being super friendly at the bar, make you feel right at home. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect – there are times when staffing feels a bit stretched, leading to waits that might frustrate you, especially if you're popping in before the theatre or for a quick bite. I've heard a few tales of service being inconsistent, with staff occasionally distracted, and while the food is generally good, it doesn't always knock it out of the park. Still, with a solid 4.0 rating overall, it's worth a visit if you're in Altrincham; just pop in with realistic expectations, book ahead if you can, and you'll likely have a cracking time swapping stories over a meal.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is generally spot on, with tasty options like the new lunch dishes starting from just £5, and I've heard great things about the Grilled Chicken Caesar Flatbread and the comforting fish pie fishcake.
  • Service can be absolutely brilliant when it's on form – think friendly staff who go above and beyond, like that chap who handled a big group single-handedly and made a birthday feel special.
  • It's a cracking place to catch live sports, with TNT Sports showing the Premier League and more, making it perfect for a relaxed afternoon or evening with mates.
  • They've got a welcoming atmosphere with comfortable seating and a good bar, plus breakfast is served early, which is handy if you're starting your day with a hearty meal.
Cons
  • Staffing can be a bit thin on the ground at times, leading to waits at the bar or for your food, which might put a dampener on things if you're in a rush.
  • Service isn't always consistent; I've seen mentions of staff being on their phones or not as attentive, which takes away from the overall experience.
  • The food can be hit or miss – while some dishes are lovely, others come across as just average, and the decor might not wow you either.
  • With only a few staff around, it can feel a tad overwhelming for them during busy periods, so you might end up waiting a bit longer than you'd like.

I went as I was going to the theatre. I went in and thought there was a family as I went in. Mum and ad were on phones and laptops. Then a teen slouched across a chair. Turns out she worked there. I was waiting at the bar for a while to get what is at best average food. It was not great. The decor was tired to be honest. Food tasted OK. It was nothing special. To be honest fast food would have been quicker and easier. It was dead inside like my soul as I waited for food.

We arrived but there was only one member of staff on duty. This gentleman went above and beyond with his service. He was amazing he served behind the bar whist taking orders for food and then serving them to our table. There was 9 of us and one of my sons birthday albeit 34 th. I have never experienced such wonderful service. The food was hot and lovely. But to be honest it was the quite efficient lovely service provided by the staff member that made the whole thing fantastic. Lunch time 05/04/2025. Thank you so so much to the gentleman who served us for making our visit so wonderful.

This could be an excellent little pub/restaurant but they do have issues with staff.Quant little rooms, comfortable seating, live sport and a good bar but so few staff.Obviously there was a wait for the evening meal but it was very nice when served. The breakfast next morning was lovely too (thanks chef)and the waiter/manager on his own did a great job.We think the place is up for sale so in limbo at the moment but it's a great overnight stay and close to the airport. The four people we saw are doing an incredible job considering.

lovely pub and food. The young gentleman who served us at the bar made the whole place 5 stars! He was extremely friendly and quick with serving us. Very rare to get such good customer service nowadays - if I owned a restaurant, I'd definitely be recruiting him! Ordered the trio of pies and asked if I could swap the chicken tikka for another lamb and he did it for me without any issues.
