Old Market Tavern, Old Market Pl, Altrincham WA14 4DN

About This Pub

Ah, the Old Market Tavern – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of a community, isn't it? From what I've gathered chatting about it, it's got this infectious energy with live music popping up at least three times a week, making it a top pick if you're after a bit of a singalong or just a relaxed evening with mates. The cask ales are genuinely well-kept, and when the staff are in good spirits, they're efficient and add to that warm, chatty atmosphere that's perfect for whiling away an hour or two. But, and I have to be straight with you, it's not all roses – some have mentioned an off-putting vibe for anyone who's not a regular, with service that can drag its feet or feel a tad frosty, leaving you wondering if you're intruding. Then there's the wear and tear; it's been called a bit of a dump in reviews, with damp seats and a general rundown feel that might make you think twice about settling in. Prices can sting a bit too, especially for a standard pint nudging £5, and if you're hoping for food or constant entertainment, you might be out of luck. Overall, it's a gem for locals who know what to expect, but if you're just passing through, it pays to go in with your eyes open – weigh up that community charm against the rough edges and decide if it's your cup of tea, or should I say, pint!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got a fantastic community vibe with live music happening at least three times a week, making it a brilliant spot for a lively night out.
  • The selection of cask ales is spot on – well-kept and a real treat for anyone who appreciates a proper pint.
  • Staff can be pleasant and efficient when they're on form, and the pub's atmosphere shines during events like gigs, where it's all about good chats and friendly faces.
  • As a local haunt, it's got that unpretentious charm, especially on busy evenings, offering a welcoming space for a catch-up or to enjoy some tunes.
Cons
  • Some visitors have felt an icy reception, like it's more for the regulars, with staff delaying service or making newcomers feel out of place.
  • The place has been described as a bit run-down in spots – think wet seats and a general sense that it's falling apart, which can put a damper on the experience.
  • Beers can feel overpriced at nearly £5 a pint for standard ales, and there might not always be much going on, like no music or food options when you pop in.
  • Recent feedback suggests it might not be the most reliable for a quick drink, with some folks leaving without being served due to the atmosphere or slow service.

Popped in for a pint, never been before. Staff seemed to do everything they could to delay serving me. I got the impression from the icy atmosphere, that it's a locals bar only. Left without getting a drink, in a bar with only a few people.

Total dump. The place is falling apart! Looks like it will be closed down soon, if not it should be. Just one customer when I went in. No music, no food and not an enjoyable place at all. Wet seats too. Overpriced beers, nearly £5 for a pint of standard ale. Lady behind the bar was pleasant enough though. Looks like the live music (if there still is any) is the only thing keeping it going. Steer clear otherwise.
