About This Pub

Ah, Friary Derby – it's one of those pubs that really knows how to make you feel welcome, isn't it? From what I've gathered, the staff go above and beyond; they're quick with a smile and always on hand to sort you out, whether it's recommending a cocktail or helping with dietary needs. The drinks menu is a proper treat, packed with craft beers and those 2-4-1 cocktail deals that make it easy to enjoy a night without spending a fortune. And let's not forget the bottomless brunch – sounds like a winner for lazy weekends with mates, with solid food and endless refills keeping the good times rolling. The place buzzes with energy, especially during live sports or events, and they've got a beer garden that's perfect for sunnier days. On the flip side, it's worth noting that not every visit is flawless; one chap had a bit of a nightmare first time around, and while they offered a discount, it didn't quite hit the mark for him. Plus, with openings kicking off around 4 PM most days, it might not be the go-to for an early tipple. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed evening or a lively get-together, but like any spot, it's best to keep expectations realistic and maybe pop in for a quick recce first. If you're in Derby, I'd say give it a go – you might just find your new favourite haunt!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff at Friary Derby are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and attentive, making every visit feel warm and personal, just like chatting with old mates.
  • They've got a cracking selection of craft beers, cocktails, and tasty food deals, including that bottomless brunch which is spot on for a fun day out without breaking the bank.
  • The atmosphere is lively and inclusive, with live sport screenings and events that really get everyone in the mood, plus it's great for families with helpful touches like accommodating allergies.
  • Prices are reasonable, so you can enjoy a proper night out or a casual catch-up without worrying about the cost.
  • It's well set up for groups, whether it's a birthday bash or corporate do, with options for private hire and a beer garden to soak up the sun.
Cons
  • There can be the odd service hiccup, like one person mentioned a rough first visit that wasn't fully sorted out, even with a discount offered.
  • Opening times start a bit late in the day on most weekdays, which might not suit if you're after a quick pint earlier in the afternoon.
  • It seems like not every experience is perfect, so you might want to check in advance if you're planning something special to avoid any surprises.

*UPDATE MAY 2025* Since my last review, the manager offered us a discount for a bottomless brunch but only for 25%. Wasn’t happy with this discount to be honest as we were expecting a free bottomless brunch since our first experience was so horrific. We took the offer and this time round I can say the service improved. We were seated immediately this time. The girl who served us was very quick and thorough, listened to all dietary requirements, and was friendly. The food and drinks were nice and the drinks were flowing this time round. The music was better and we did have a good time. However once we finished our brunch around 9:30/10pm the whole place became vacant, the DJ had left to go next door, and there was practically no one but us there so we ended up leaving to go somewhere else. I have changed my review to a 4 star because the brunch part was much better this time round. MARCH 2025 - The service was the worst we have received during any bottomless brunch. It was also the worst bottomless brunch we have also been to. The girl with ginger hair and glasses was extremely rude, we had to ask to be served by someone else because of how she was speaking to us and the attitude she had. We were there for a bottomless brunch and the second round of drinks came after 40+ mins. When we arrived we were also waiting for 15 minutes+ to be seated, and had to keep asking if our table was ready, despite having booked a table and paid a deposit online. The food was not good and we left most of it, especially the pizzas as they were burnt and hard. The only semi good thing was the drinks, although some came very watered down. Overall, we wouldn’t recommend coming here and didn’t enjoy the experience and left disappointed.

The bottomless brunches at the Friary are 10/10, food was great and so were the cocktails and the prices were very reasonable. The staff were attentive and made sure that we always had drinks on our table, special shout-out to Sophie as she was brilliant. Would highly recommend!

Had an amazing experience here yesterday with my partner and two boys. Holly and Charlie were so helpful and friendly. They got games out for my little one to play with and were so attentive the entire time. The food was great (they were amazing at helping with my youngest ones allergies) and the drinks were fab too. I've never known a bottomless brunch to have such amazing food options. My little one had already asked when we can go back! Thank you so much for making my birthday celebrations so enjoyable!! We'll definitely be returning 🥰
