About This Pub

Right, so I've been having a look at the Egg & Monkey in Aylesbury, and it's one of those places that sounds like it could be a real gem if everything clicks. From what I've gathered, it's got this tucked-away vibe that's perfect for escaping the town centre chaos – imagine settling in for a relaxed evening with mates, maybe catching the latest match on TNT sports. And the food? Well, one chap raved about it being spot on, so if you're after a bite with your bevvy, that could be a winner. But, and I hate to say it, there are a few niggles that keep popping up. Some reviews mention the service feeling a tad off, like the owner or staff being a bit brusque, whether it's pushing for another drink or not handling things like allergies properly – that sweetener mix-up in a drink sounds like a right nightmare, especially if it leads to a sore throat and extra trips to the chemist. It's a shame because with an overall rating of 4.2, there must be plenty of good times had, but the recent ones are a bit mixed, averaging out at 2 out of 5. If you're heading there, I'd say go in with an open mind, maybe check if they've sorted any of those issues, and keep it in mind for a casual visit rather than something special. All in all, it's got potential, but it's worth weighing up the pros and cons before you pop in.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a lovely little pub tucked away from the hustle and bustle, making it a great spot for a quiet pint or to catch up with mates.
  • They've got TNT sports on offer, which is brilliant if you're into watching the footy or other games while enjoying a drink.
  • The food comes highly recommended from some folks – sounds like it's a real treat when it's on point.
Cons
  • There have been a few grumbles about the service, with some saying the staff can come across as a bit rude or pushy, like pressuring for another round.
  • Allergy issues have cropped up, such as not mentioning sweeteners in drinks, which led to some unpleasant experiences and extra costs for those affected.
  • A couple of reviews mentioned feeling unwelcome, like being asked to leave if you're not buying, which doesn't make for the friendliest atmosphere.

Be careful if you're allergic to sweeteners. They have 7up zero on tap and are happy to charge you for a double, not mention it and then not replace. I then had to get antihistamines for another £10 so thank you for letting me spend £20 to have a sip of a drink and have a sore throat for the night. You clearly didn't check the cctv very well because I was told it was 7up zero, if your staff don't know what they're even serving you should be concerned about your allergens policy

I would like to reply to my previous message by thanking the owner to take time to reply. However it was a disappointment that he got some facts mixed up. I noticed that this behaviour was shared by many in previous reviews so I am glad I wasn’t alone. However I wish the owner well and if there is something in his life that makes him miserable I hope he finds a way to deal with it rather than holding onto the pain that seems to bother him. He had made everyone in the group rather unhappy when we were well behaved people just enjoying an evening out. I hope he knows that had he been friendly and gave us some time to organise our drinks he would have had more orders (round 2, 3 etc for people who did want to have drinks). Of course he is the owner of the pub, again he is fine to do what suits him. It was just a shame he brought the mood down. We had our lovely rest of the evening in another pub in the end so it was good.

I genuinely hope the owner would consider addressing his customers with a more welcoming attitude. He came to us asking for everyone to buy a drink. We had two drinks and one of us is not drinking tonight. Before we could even pause and consider buying another drink he treated us rudely. I can see his standpoint of wanting to make money, the fact that this is a business not a social club is totally understandable. But I genuinely hope he would consider using a different attitude to achieve what he wants: happy customers who want to spend money at his pub. That said, this is his pub and he has full freedom to do what he wants so up to him to hear this or notZ

I genuinely thought the guy was joking when he asked me to leave, i was driving so couldn’t drink and i didn’t buy one, as i have an issue and can’t drink lots. i then looked up on the internet to see if there was an ordering policy and couldn’t find one. lots of better pubs out there, didn’t even get a free lollipop for my troubles. you might need to fire some people then because i’ve been here before without buying anything, and don’t say everything with a smirk on your face so then people will actually believe you the first time, i was still sure you were joking the second time but happy to pay for a drink after acknowledging the truth to your persistence, but you were rude, impatient and unwilling to serve. i’m surprised the dog wasn’t kicked out for not buying a drink, however not surprised that your ‘casual, groups friendly club’ was practically empty on a friday night considering the way you treat the people that would have happily paid you after understanding the rules of the pub!
