About This Pub

You know, if you're after a proper Essex country pub that feels like a step back to a more relaxed time, Dukes Head in Billericay really hits the mark. It's got this inviting vibe with its recently spruced-up interiors – think spacious dining areas and a cracking beer garden that's ideal for a sunny afternoon pint or a bite outdoors. The food is where it shines brightest; folks rave about the fresh, seasonal dishes made from local goodies, whether it's a hearty roast or those mouthwatering desserts that cap off a meal just right. The team behind the bar and in the kitchen are dead helpful and friendly, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. It's open most of the day, seven days a week, so it's brilliant for everything from a quick work lunch to a celebratory dinner. That said, it does lean towards the premium end price-wise, so it might not be your go-to for a cheeky midweek bevvy if you're on a budget. And while the recent buzz is all positive, with everyone loving the clean spaces and welcoming feel, the overall score hints that it could get a bit hectic on peak times, potentially leading to the odd wait. All in all, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts looking for a balanced mix of good grub, great company, and that quintessential British pub charm.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely brilliant – fresh, seasonal dishes made from local ingredients, with standout options like amazing roasts and desserts that leave you wanting more.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and helpful advice on the menu, making every visit feel welcoming.
  • The atmosphere is just lovely, with beautifully renovated interiors, a sophisticated bar, and a stunning beer garden perfect for relaxing with a pint or enjoying alfresco dining.
  • It's spotlessly clean throughout, which really adds to the overall experience, especially for special occasions like anniversaries or family meals.
  • A great spot for all sorts of get-togethers, whether it's a quick lunch, a romantic dinner, or a casual drink in a picturesque Essex setting.
Cons
  • As it's a premium pub, the prices are on the moderate side, which might make it a bit pricey for everyday visits if you're watching the pennies.
  • Being a bit out in the countryside, it could feel a tad remote for those not local to Billericay, though that's part of its charm for a proper country pub vibe.
  • While recent feedback has been glowing, the overall rating suggests there might be occasional slip-ups, like service hiccups on busier days, even if we haven't seen that in the latest reviews.

The two of us had lunch to celebrate our anniversary. The main meal was lovely and the desserts were amazing! The staff were very friendly, we had Donna who was lovely. Everywhere was clean and spotless. Definitely go back again and recommend our friends.

Went to this hidden gem today with my mrs and mother in law. What can i say. It was a very good experience. We got there an hour before out table booking and had no issues at all. We just got some drinks and sat in the garden. Has lovely sitting area at the back also at the front. Has a nice pond too with fishes inside. Very relaxing. When it was time to take a seat in the restaurant area, we went inside and was greeted by donna, she had a smile all throughout. It was a busy afternoon so donna had to attend to other things while a lovely young lady called destiny took over. She was also very polite and well spoken. She served us professionally while she also looked after other tables as it was busy. We got the sharing starters, the king prawns where lovely, the battered sea bass was very tasty, calamari was just calamari but the good one, courgette and pepper was also very tasty, i dont normally like courgettes but i loved this one. When we sat on the table we were given a big cold as ice bottle of tap water on the house. For the main i got the sea bass, very delicious but i wasnt too sure about the yellow sauce. Was still nice though but next time i might ask for them not to put the sauce. Mother in law got the king prawn, chorizo and scallop linguine, and mrs got the double pork. We got 2 portions of crispy onion rings but i wish we only got 1. The portion was huge, 3 of us couldnt finish it. They where the best onion rings we have ever had, very fluffy and crispy. The presentation of everything was just spot on. I felt like i was in a restaurant in mayfair! 😂 i will definitely go there again and i highly recommend.

Had a lovely roast today at the Dukes Head. We had a stylish booth in what appeared to be the adults area. Service was excellent, friendly but very professional. Great quality food served with a smile. Highly recommend it!

We came in for our anniversary dinner and were not disappointed!! The food was absolutely out of this world. Everything was so fresh and delicious, so we opted for 3 courses, because why not! The staff were also really lovely and friendly, and assisted us with menu choices without a fuss. The only very very slight thing to mention was that we were sat at a lovely table that was near the exit to the garden, and unfortunately every 1-2 minutes, someone would either go out or come back in, and the door would slam very aggressively. It did start to become very irritating, and when I mentioned it to someone, she went and locked the doors from the outside so nobody could come back in. Might be something to look into for future, but it didn’t ruin our experience at all. Thank you for a lovely meal!

My favourite restaurant .... the food is amazing! The staff are so attentive, the pub has such a lovely atmosphere and love the roaring fire. The Sunday Roast is the best I have had with huge portions and nothing is too much trouble. I have sat in the restaurant, conservatory and bar area and love it. It has a dog friendly bar area too. Natalie, Megan, Harley, Georgie and the rest of the team work so hard. My dad is gluten intolerant, and they make sure he is well catered for with lots of options that he can have. I can't wait to return.
