The King's Head in Basildon

Ah, The King's Head – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper gem in Billericay, with its black-and-white timbered building harking back to 1750, making you feel like you're stepping into a bit of history every time you walk in. I love how the staff go out of their way to make you feel at home; they're chatty, helpful, and on the ball, whether you're there for a quick lunch or a leisurely evening. The food's a real treat too – think hearty favourites and pub classics that are packed with flavour, and it's brilliant for groups or if you've got your furry friend in tow, as it's so accommodating for dogs. The gardens are lovely for sunnier days, and those crackling log fires are just the thing when it's a bit nippy outside. On the flip side, it can sting the wallet a tad, especially if you're opting for starters, mains, and puds all round, and I've heard a few folks mention that some portions aren't quite as generous as they'd hoped, or that certain items might be off the menu on peak times like Saturdays. Still, overall, it's a smashing place for a relaxed get-together, and I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just go with an open mind and perhaps plan ahead to make the most of it.
