About This Pub
Ah, The Plough & Tractor – it's one of those classic pubs that feels like it's been around forever, tucked away in Basildon, and I can see why some folks swear by it. The landlady's been holding the fort for 25 years, which gives it that lovely, welcoming community spirit, especially when the live music kicks in on weekends – it's proper good fun then, with pints flowing and a bit of a buzz in the air. Mid-week, it's dead quiet, which is brilliant if you fancy a spot to relax with a book or just chat over a drink without the crowds. The beer holds up well, and it's nice to hear the service gets positive nods from visitors. But, honestly, it's not all rosy; the furniture and carpets are looking a bit tired and tatty, and I've heard tales of unpleasant smells from the toilets seeping into the bar, which can really dampen the mood. Plus, there's no food on site, so you might need to pop out for something to munch on, though places like Afro Joe's nearby sort that out nicely. A couple of reviews mentioned dodgy run-ins with the management, which is a pity because it could sour an otherwise decent visit. Overall, it's worth a go if you're local and up for a traditional pint, but it might need a freshen-up to keep things ticking over smoothly – just keep your expectations in check for a more relaxed affair.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
It's got a real sense of history as a longstanding local pub, with the landlady marking 25 years, which adds a warm, community feel.
-
The atmosphere picks up nicely with live acts on weekends, making it a fun spot for a pint and some entertainment.
-
Beer is generally alright, and the service gets a thumbs up from some visitors.
-
Toilets are clean and in good nick, which is always a plus in a pub.
-
It's a quiet haven mid-week if you're after a peaceful spot to read or just unwind without any fuss.
-
Plenty of nearby options for food, like grabbing some jerk chicken from Afro Joe's, which pairs well with a drink here.
Cons
-
The furniture and carpets are looking pretty worn out and could do with an overhaul – it's a bit of a letdown in an otherwise charming spot.
-
Some evenings, especially Saturdays, can be surprisingly quiet, almost dead, which might not live up to expectations for a lively night out.
-
There's been complaints about smells drifting from the toilets into the bar area, which isn't ideal for enjoying your time.
-
No food on offer at the pub itself, which is a shame if you're hoping for a bite with your beer.
-
A few folks have had rough experiences with the management, like getting banned over minor issues, which could put some off.

Could do with an overhaul. The furniture is knackered! Toilets were clean and in good condition.
Saturday night and the pub was dead.
Sofa was old and ripped, the carpet had seen better days.Beer was OK so was the servise.
My first and last visit here.Such a shame as its a lovely old building. There was the smell comeing from the toilet into the bar area.
I was very disappointed as been past this pub many many times.
This is a great local pub with a long standing history, the current land lady has just celebrated her 25th year. Atmosphere can go up and down but generally good especially when live acts are performing at weekends. It's quieter mid week. It would be nice if there was food available but there is a kebab/ burger bar in the carpark. Plenty of parking and occasional special events in the summer such as family days, Easter egg hunts etc and of course the staff are football mad so always ready to support local and national treams. New Year is always a good night.
Jacky Ower is stupid. banned for 3yrs cause we cracked open 2 beers(offi) after buying 2 strongbows as no beers on tap due to shortage, which cost more. You are disrespectful and you need to go,But we brought 2 ciders which we don't drink.stupid landlady. Stay away. Change landlady. You will get more business
Never judged. Never had any problems. Got plenty of books of you want to sit, read, and not be bothered.
Make sure you go to afro Joe's for some jerk chicken goodness.
