About This Pub

Ah, the Duke of York – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a warm hug when you step inside, with its classic English charm and that unmistakable pub atmosphere that makes you want to settle in for the evening. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks absolutely rave about the food; the fish and chips are crispy and spot-on, especially when you add a dash of malt vinegar, and the chicken schnitzel gets high marks too. Pair that with a pint of their Samuel Smith's cask ale, brewed with proper natural ingredients, and you've got a winning combination for a traditional night out. The staff really shine here, being super accommodating and not rushing you, which is perfect if you're grabbing a bite before heading to the theatre. On the flip side, it's a bit of a shame that everything's upstairs, so if stairs aren't your thing or the place is packed, it could feel a tad inconvenient. Plus, some of the sides might leave you wanting more, like those mushy peas that were a bit small and plain, and if wine's your preference, the options are slim compared to the beer lineup. All in all, it's a gem for anyone after that genuine pub experience, but it's worth keeping those little niggles in mind to set your expectations right – I'd say it's ideal for a casual catch-up with mates, as long as you plan ahead for the crowds.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Duke of York offers a proper traditional English pub atmosphere that really transports you back to the classics, with cosy vibes and that authentic feel we've all come to love.
  • Their food is spot on for pub grub – think delicious fish and chips, chicken schnitzel, and even onion rings that hit the spot, all prepared with a passion by the chefs.
  • The beers are a highlight, straight from Samuel Smith's in Yorkshire; their cask Old Brewery Bitter is served fresh from oak casks, and it's all made with natural ingredients for a proper pint.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home, especially if you're popping in for a meal before catching a show nearby.
  • It's conveniently located near Victoria Station, with outdoor seating for when the weather's playing nice, and plenty of seats upstairs for a proper sit-down.
Cons
  • Food is only served upstairs, which might be a bit of a trek if you're not up for stairs or if the pub's buzzing and space is tight.
  • Some sides, like the mushy peas, can be on the small side and a tad underwhelming in flavour, so you might want to double-check portions if you're peckish.
  • The wine selection is pretty basic – they're more about the beers and spirits, so if you're after a wide choice of wines, you might find it lacking.
  • It can get quite busy, especially around show times, so booking ahead or arriving early is a must to avoid waiting around.

If you are looking for a traditional English public no further. This place is awesome. From the fish and chips to the library you can eat in the beers. This is what it feels like to be at an English pub. My wife got the fish and chips. I got the chicken schnitzel. We couldn’t pass up onion rings. Rinse down with a few cocktails and maybe a beer and it was a perfect dinner. 12/10 would recommend.

A lovely first meal in London in a long time. Of course it had to be fish and chips and was not disappointed. Crispy even when doused with malt vinegar. Side of mushy peas was a tad small, and while flavorless, that's not unusual. Upstairs dining room was not too busy but was hopping by the time we left. The early evening sun was very warm at our table but our server kindly closed the shades for us. Overall, a nice experience .

Warning: California/Oregon Native here so this review will have a west coast American bias. We came to this pub/restaurant for dinner our first night in London. I’m a big Fish & Chips fan so that’s what I wanted for my first night in town. I also enjoy beer so it seemed like the perfect option. We ate upstairs in the restaurant as the pub downstairs served limited food. The restaurant had a super cool vibe. It was very cozy and quiet. We sat in the back room which was styled like a library and it was so relaxing and great for having a nice conversation while eating. I ordered the Traditional Hand Battered Fish & Chips of course and it was great. It was my first Fish and Chips in London and ended up being one of my favorites (that includes the one I had at the Michelin Star rated Hind’s Head in Bray). Just a good solid piece of fish, well battered and fried with a good tartar sauce. Some places get way too fancy and forget sometimes it’s best to keep it simple. My wife ordered the Pulled Burrata and was really happy with it. She wanted something fresh and it really hit the spot for her. So much so that she wanted it again when we flew through London a week later. We also shared an order of the Butter Roasted Carrots and they were pretty solid. I didn’t think they were anything special, but worked well with the mushy peas that came with my Fish & Chips. Obviously I had a couple pints with dinner and my wife got a glass of wine. Bartender was really cool and made some good beer recommendations as I hadn’t had a lot of English beers. I would definitely go here again if/when I’m in London again.

I was very early to see Hamilton at the Victoria Theater. I asked if it was ok if I take my time with dinner. The staff were super friendly. Tho there was hardly anyone there when I arrived, they were fully booked with reservations before the show. I was welcomed in, not rushed and had a lovely meal. When they really got crowded and needed my table, I offered to move to the bar area. They insisted I did not have to. (But I wasn’t going to hold down a table for 4 by myself.) That kind of service - combined with good food and tasty beer - makes for a great restaurant. And I did move to the bar area. (This was end of November 2024.)

Good Samuel Smith's pub across the road from Victoria Underground Station. One cask beer on handpump; a good pint of Old Brewery Bitter served from a traditional wooden cask. Lots of outdoor seating. The Duke of York is on the site of a previous pub which was demolished as part of the ongoing modernisation of the whole area. The new pub is built in Edwardian style with trademark Sam Smith's dark wood and etched glass. There is a downstairs Public Bar and another room upstairs with a bar and restaurant. As with all Sam Smith's pubs, no swearing is allowed and mobile phones or tablets may not be used (other than to pay!).
